I was having this debate with my brother so I thought I would seek closure on it through the internet. What do you feel it is, cake or Biscuit?
    Here are some facts for each side;
Jaffa Cakes were given the title of biscuit by a court so they could be taxed as biscuits (mind you biscuits are taxed lower)
Jaffa Cakes have a base made of sponge cake and are covered in dark chocolate - much like some cakes.
In my opinion, despite the court's verdict, I think they are cakes because of their composition. I think they were made to be taxed as biscuits because it means they cost less - theoretically improving sales. But who cares what I think? What's your opinion? Give reasons and keep it clean - no arguing with profanities or uneducated comments about the weight of one's parents.
    Thanks!

Wikipedia calls it Biscuit-sized cakes. There you have it!  j/k

In 2012 they were ranked the best selling cake or biscuit in the United Kingdom.

The moment I read the title I knew this was a British thread, made by British people, for the British people. I just... I knew it. That's all. Carry on.

Cake, of course. Just a mini, biscuit-sized cake. If a Jaffa Cake was to be scaled up, we wouldn't even need to argue about it. Jaffa Cakes are cakes.

They are gross thats what they are. They have yuckie dark chocolate, sponge and jam... They go hard when they mature so they are a cake, biscuits go soft when they get old. I'm pretty sure thats the official way to differentiate between a cake and a biscuit.

I have lived in England for 2 years now, and I only have heard of Jaffa Cakes. I have never seen them at all or even eaten one. So I don't know what to say.

Where's the poll? I always considered Jaffa Cakes to be well, uh, cakes! I think some confusion is the result of people calling them biscuits, since we're often kind of treating them like biscuits (something to have with cup of tea), if that makes sense. And they taste like damn good cakes! XD

They are cakes. They just are.

C'mon guys that's why they're called jaffa CAKES

And when you bite a jaffacake it's soft and squishy. Ifyou bite a biscuit it's the opposite. :eusa_danc

I've had this debate so many times that I'm not even sure where I stand on the issue anymore.

I think I'm going for biscuit, because:

    1. You do eat them like a biscuit (i.e. multiple, and with tea)
    2. They are biscuit shaped and come in biscuity packaging
    3. They are soft but not soft enough to warrant being called a cake.
    4. In the biscuit aisle

To be honest they are a lot like lady-fingers, which whilst a sponge I would also class as biscuits when eating outside the context of a trifle. Biscuit shaped, sold with other biscuits in biscuit boxes and eaten like biscuits.

I once ate a month old Jaffa Cake by accident. Might as well have chewed on a mouth of dried Polyfilla.

Ah, but there lies an important factor in the decision making! I think the size and shape give it a far more biscuit-like quality.

Mind you, you get those giant Jaffa Cakes in Costa (ABSOLUTELY VILE and about a week's RDA of sugar) - which I feel neither deserve to be called a cake or a biscuit.

You aren't missing much on the Jaffa Cake front, they are a pretty average biscuit/cookie (or cake if you insist).

Custard Creams on the otherhand, if only the world knew what it was missing.

Oh, actually, I have those. I don't know them as Custard Creams (we just call them vanilla/cream cookies lol), but they look the same. They are ok. Then again, I'm not the biggest fan of vanilla (in any way...).

EDIT: Nevermind, I just checked and it's actually the same brand; Custard Creams. Huh, I guess I never bothered reading the package.

    It will never make sense.

Chocolate coated cake = no tax. Chocolate covered biscuit = tax.

The same way chocolate milkshake is not taxed...yet orange juice and smoothies are.

Or books are not taxed, but CDs/DVDs are.

    Completely bonkers.

    To the question I say-

I don't really care, I'd never betray them either way.

Imagine though: You're a biscuit now?!?! How dare you! We are so over! I'm breaking up with you, Oreo treats me better. XD Just kidding, I love both. Oreos and Jaffas forever.

I love how this is a debate though, and how it can get as heated as debates on how much freddos should cost can over here. Because priorities...

Damn, I want Jaffa cakes now. :icon_sad:

I made a mistake! I'm an idiot! They were ruled as cakes by the court but were in fact considered biscuits because of size! Forgive me, I should have researched instead of going on my goldfish memory! I also believe (with research this time) that cakes are taxed 17.5% less than biscuits but it is hard to tell from my sources. I'm ever so sorry! I still feel they are cakes though, that shall never change!
I had to make a mistake in my first thread now, didn't I ? I'm gonna stop listening to my Dad as well - he was the one who told me the court ruled them as biscuits! Not the best moral to take from this!
