It's a shame. I have always liked Arizona.

    Hi brainwashed,

Before you decide to move, I think we need to take a critical look at the article vis-à-vis the underlying data in the report. Basically HRC put each state and Washington DC into a bucket (the categories are described in the report). I did a quick tally of each category so we get a sense of the distribution of each category.
    1. High Priority to Achieve Basic Equality: 28 (54.9%)
    2. Building Equality: 10 (19.6%)
    3. Solidifying Equality: 6 (11.8%)
    4. Working toward Innovative Equality: 7 (13.7%)
By looking at the data, it's clear that while Arizona earned the lowest grade, it also shared that distinction with 54.9% of the other states/Washington DC. While below average performer would be accurate, using worst in a skewed distribution is misleading. Thus I feel that it's not entirely intellectually honest to portray AZ in such a negative light even though such a portrayal is an effective call to action.

I'll let you decide if you feel that it's a fair statement or sensationalism for the author to claim Arizona is one of the worst states for LGBT equality.

Just Google multicultural crayons. (Have a nice day!)

Arizona may be bad, but you could be in Mississippi, which is really bad in that scorecard. Also, Arizona is only slightly worse than Montana.

Move to Washington. Seattle specifically. It's wonderful. I can feel the love and protection from everyone around.

Just to provide some balance here... Seattle is not perfect. I have no idea what the exact LGBT climate is like (I was last up there long before I came out to myself). But I do know that Seattle is not a cheap place to live. Surrounding area is cheaper, but far from cheap.

It can also be hard forming social connections in this area. I have been drowning in loneliness for 3+ years, and every attempt at making just one :***: friend has failed. I don't even have anyone to go and see a movie with. Not that I go to movies, due to the cost.

And yes...some people find the rain in winter tiresome.

Former Phoenician (of 15 years here). Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Tucson and Flagstaff all have anti-discrimination employment laws. So even though it's not statewide, you still have the major cities providing legal protections.

And it's not hell in Phoenix. I'm in Washington, DC and while it's far better because the gay community is far more visible and there are more out LGBT people concentrated in the area, Phoenix still has a decent number of LGBT people too. They're just very spread out (like Phoenix is) and far more are in the closet. That's why there is no specific gayborhood except maybe a few businesses near 7th Ave and Camelback Rd, whereas in DC you have Dupont and Logan Circle, and a large number of gay people in the Capitol Hill, Shaw, Columbia Heights, and Bloomingdale neighborhoods.

Arizona is conservative, but it's not Mississippi either.

I'm from NYC so I'm a bit biased but from what I know Arizona is oddly Republican compared to other Western states. Probably because of all the retired-folk and ranchers.

Don't know much about Denver. But I know someone (apparently straight) who lived there many years, and he misses a lot of things there. Unfortunately, his professional life made a move to this place a practical choice.

*sigh* Yeah, it's pretty bad here. Avoid Mississippi like the plague.

Arizona has always scared me. They have that crazy Sheriff Joe guy out there, and some of the zaniest Republicans you can shake a stick at. Oddly, it wanted to be a slave state, at one time.

Then, you have all those guns, mass shootings, and all. Not a place I'd wanna live, though the canyons and wilderness are nice, and if I had to live their, Tucson seems like the best bet. Phoenix looks SO boring, like this giant, sprawling suburb of sameness. Maybe it's not so bad, but not on my list of places to go.

It is nice, but damn, that place makes me feel poor.

Gotta have a pretty hefty income, in that town! Pretty, though.

I say move out east, the people are easier to meet, and more down to earth, I've found. West coast cities always felt kinda 'cold' to me, socially.
