There's a girl in one of my classes who thinks she's a cat. She's had two of her teeth shaped into a cat's canines, wears cat ears, a tail, all sorts. She's a nice pers- cat, though.

Livelove, it seems clear that any ridiculous, outlandish, completely batshit crazy claim that anyone wants to make is just fine with you. You are certainly entitled to hold that belief.

But realize it is a belief or opinion, not based in any modern thinking or science. This is clear based on your repeated references to the tired and irrelevant (and disproven) argument that just because LGBT people were not accepted at a time when no research was being done, that somehow makes any ridiculous, outlandish claim by any special snowflake in need of attention worthwhile and worthy of the benefit of the doubt.

So... Believe what you want. But don't frame it as having any basis whatsoever in sound scientific thinking , or even in general agreement among credible professionals who work in the field, because it doesn't. It's simply a special snowflake, seeking attention, and a few years from now, she will likely be cringing with embarrassment over her ridiculousness.

Her "identity" doesn't invalidate mine but cetainly does a perfect job at undermining acceptance and validity of transgender identity.

Even though our case is not the same has hers, bible thumpers and politicians will say she's nuts and include us in that category.

I mean it's hard enough to convince people we aren't all gay crossdressers and butch lesbians...

I don't hate her but gender is a social construct, species are not. She is mentally imbalanced.

I would be sympathetic (and it would indeed be validly parallel to a transperson's situation) if this person had a cat's brain. But a cursory glance suggests she does not.

She seems to be having an identity crisis. I seriously doubt that she's otherkin, it just seems like she's putting up this facade to gain attention. There's no way anyone would really care unless she was making a huge deal about it, which, from what I understand, otherkin don't really care to cause a scene and be up in everyone's faces about what they do.

I noticed that as well. Maybe it's because each new generation breaks new ground in the field of "open-mindedness". A century ago it was considered open-minded to think that perhaps a black person was more than 3/5 of a person. In the 50s, it was open-minded to think that women could have careers as well as men. When I was a teen, it was considered open-minded to be accepting of LGBT people. Now it's open-minded to be accepting of cat-people. Who knows what the future has in store? :icon_wink

We don't have all the facts, so we shouldn't judge her. If she wants attention, let her have attention. It probably doesn't have anything to do with you.

All attention comes at a cost, either to one self or to someone else.

I knew a person in high school that always wanted attention from everyone. Start faking seizures in the middle of class, started speaking tongues in church, oh and that one week went blind..yet someone how was always talking to people on Facebook and texting yet in public made sure to bump into everything and ask for help; parents shelled out money to take her to a specialist in the neighboring city, and the minute they step in the doctor's office she immediately tells every one she can suddenly see and that they should go home. Doctors check her out anyway and say she is 100% healthy, took her parents aside and said it was highly unlikely that she was ever blind and that given past history she was making it up.
Last year she sprang up saying she was part of an ancient wiccan family and that her soul was half animal.
6 months ago she came out as a trans-woman. Yeah it will sound bad but I seriously doubt it, but I will respect the pronouns anyway. She has now started telling people that she has been transitioning since she was 13, meaning she has been on hormones. She said she didn't need to see a therapist and that she was about tonlegally change her name and gender marker (which can not be done in our state without proof of surgery). Oh, you might say its harmless but let's take a look what has happen in the long run. This person can not find a job because everyone knows she lies and pulls bat shit crazy stunts. Her parents spent thousands of dollars on medical issues that weren't there. Because of that when her dad feel I'll they didn't have enough money to take him to the doctor right away, he had cancer and it spread, he ended up dying last year. Because of all the inaccurate information she has been given about beings trans and saying that "its fun" and "its easy" a lot of young people are getting the wrong idea on trans issues.

So when I see otherkins and plantkins and the likes I associate them with the likes of the attention whore above. Yeah, their fantasy world might not be hurting anyone at first glance, but in the long run it is. 2, 5, maybe 10 years from now they will look back and cringe. They will wonder why they did that, they will have to live with the fact that everyone knows about it. They will have great difficulty in finding a job.

Maybe one day we will live in a society where dressing and acting like a cat is fine, but so far that can only be found in role playing and furries, and they don't let their hobbies interfere in there professional and public lives.

I wouldn't care regardless. She can do her and I'll do me.

Although I think her problem is attention seeking rather than genuinely believing she is a cat I think this raises interesting questions.

Suppose we discovered that some people have, perhaps due to a special brain damage or malformation, genuine feeling of being born to the wrong species. Would your opinion of her change then? Suppose there is no cure to take away this feeling. Would it be the right thing to do to treat these people as animals they feel they are? How far should it be taken?

Now let's suppose there was a cure, perhaps medication or brain surgery, would it be the right thing to force these people to take this medication and refuse to play along with their feeling of being an animal? If the answer is yes, does this also apply to gays and transgenders etc too? If not, why not?

My personal take is that both cases should be equivalent. If there is no "cure" to gender dysphoria or species dysphoria etc then we should what it takes to make these people feel comfortable with themselves. However, if we discover a medicine that took away the dysphoria then using this medicine should be the first line of treatment rather than start treating people how they feel they are if this is in conflict with observable reality.

Eh, I'm not gonna judge. I've been involved in the therian community on and off for a while and I will say that most don't do...that.

And I don't have anything nice to say so I won't say anything.

I agree, SouthernStoic. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.

This post made me think of cat-woman... The woman who altered her appearance to look like a cat. Or at least, cat-like. Creepy

I find this weird, sure. But it doesn't really affect me so.

Ya know what, I'm convinced that there's enough hate for trans folk out there as it is that one more case of some lady who thinks she's a cat is a raindrop in the fucking ocean. It's not worth it to feel like "people like her are making it worse for us." I hope this lady turns out OK.
