Here is the original news in Russian.

MOSCOW, JANUARY 18TH, TASS; The State Duma Commitee on constitution legislation and statecraft rejected the initiative of the CPRF deputies Ivan Nikitchuk and Nikolai Arefyev on instituting administrative punishment for public demonstration of untraditional sexual relationships. Communists suggested to add a new law to the administrative codex of the Russian Federation that would punish "public expression of untraditional sexual relationships that is constituted by public demonstration of warped sexual preferences in public places that do not warrant criminal punishment" with a fine from 4 to 5 thousand roubles. Should such a public demonstration occur in an educational institution, the authors of the law suggested arresting the perpetrator for 15 days. "Today, the propaganda of homosexuality, in various forms, presents a grave danger to our society. WE must understand that open demonstration of these untraditional sexual relationships causes a conscious warping of our native culture and the basis upon which human relationships stand," - the note regarding the law says.

However, the commitee considered these arguments to be insufficient for instituting the law. The Commitee's Chairman, Vladimir Plagin, stated that "the commitee recommends rejecting the law-project unanimously." - stated the commitee's chairman, Vladimir Plagin.

Wow, thank goodness it didn't pass! I still feel terrible for LGBT people living in Russia, though. :frowning2:

Wonder if they'd have vetoed it if the two MPs were from Putin's party and not the communists.

It does not work like that. Commies are considered to be allied with Putin, so they're treated as "theirs", though their views on economy and the like may differ from United Russia.

I'm still going nowhere near Russia, but very glad it didn't pass. Things are bad enough there as it is without them trying to make it even worse.

That law is the stupidest thing I ever heard. I do not believe homosexuality to be "untraditional" it has been there for a long, long, long while so therefore in my opinion is still traditional and is supposed to create a variety in the human species. Feeling very sorry for Russian LGBT right now(*hug*)
