Denmark Considers Seizing Valuables From Migrants - WSJ

I find it difficult to come up with the words to describe how awful this is. The idea that confiscating people's belongings helps create self-sufficiency is almost entirely incoherent; Rasmussen's government has been trying to deter refugees through any means possible and this bill is just a more extreme expression of his government's attitude.

It would be utterly degrading for people to have to surrender items such as phones and computers in exchange for entry - especially when the value of what they may bring in is so low. It would be cruel to deprive desperate people of what little wealth they have left.

Still, the opposition parties are putting up a good fight, at least in raising awareness. It's a pity the Folketing is unicameral, because there is very little now to stop this bill from becoming law.

Hang on, so they say "In Denmark, you should try and support yourself if you can" but then are taking away the money they have - the money that would support them [even if it's not a lot] - that doesn't make any sense. [unless I've read it wrong].

The Danish government is extremely reactionary. In the last few years it has turned on its tail and is just repugnant... It's the worst government of all the Nordic countries, definitely.

Why not simply close doors to migrants if they're so particular? Is it International peer pressure or something? I don't understand.

I said not too long ago that the real threat to Europe is the resurgence of the far-right. What an unbelievably nasty and horrid thing to do.

    Their country, their laws.

'After considerable uproar Parliament clarified that jewellery, including wedding rings, and other sentimental possessions would not be taken.'

I can understand the idea of making their country less appealing to would-be immigrants, but I think they should just keep them out in the first place.

Of course it would pass, obviously. Have any of you looked at EU Regulations, such as the Rome I or II Regulations? Denmark is listed for having a lot of derogations.

Ditto Russia or Uganda and their anti-LGBT laws - but it being 'their country' is really besides the point, isn't it? It's wrong regardless.

Of course the Danes would do this. This is the same country where you have to name your kids from an approved registry.

Well, that's your opinion. I disagree for this situation, but such is life.

Huh, and I always thought Denmark was more liberal, or perhaps that's just Copenhagen, a city I've always wanted to visit.

Denmark has always been difficult with refugees and racism and as a small country mass migration is quite a disruption, but it's partly its own fault (and that of a number of other Northern European governments) for creating agreements that force nations at the point of entry (namely Greece and Italy) to take the bulk of refugees instead of allowing a pan-EU agreement on an equitable resettlement of refugees to come about.

Partly because of that lack of a realistic framework for a large intake of refugees, they just weren't equipped to deal with the massive human influx of the past year. The Southern European nations haven't been exactly keen to cooperate with unfair EU refugee agreements, so migrants can flock north disorganised because if Italy and Greece process them all, then they have to take far more than their fair share.

    ---------- Post added 27th Jan 2016 at 11:55 AM ----------

Denmark is a fairly liberal country in many ways, including an increasing economic liberalism, but racism has been a problem in Denmark for quite some time. It's famed for exempting itself from European agreements on human rights and refugees as well as having a large parliamentary bloc of nativists.

The average Dane is presumably not racist, but they're certainly famed for being less racially tolerant than their German and especially Swedish neighbours.

In any case, this is a disgusting deterrence that humiliates the already humiliated and further impoverishes those in most need of help. It serves no purpose but to scare them away; you will not gain a lot of revenue by robbing refugees. It's cruel and politically cowardly; instead of seeking a long-term, European solution, Denmark is just going to block its borders until an unspecified time when the crisis abates.

Just another crime by the Europeans.

This one isn't that different than the tax system if you think about it.

"By the Europeans?" Can you maybe not imply we're all criminals for the actions of one nation?

Please don't entertain it. You'll gain absolutely nothing from the experience.

Though I do think this law is repulsive, I also think there are valid concerns regarding the sheer number of people arriving. Sweden has the same population as London but has taken in over 100,000 refugees so far. Problems are inevitable and quite frankly the response to this crisis has been haphazard and poorly thought out. It's just a shame that the reactionary right is taking advantage of this.

Countries like the US are much better equipped to absorb such a large amount of people. They need to do more as well - Europe alone can't be responsible for this.
