Sweet I guess. <3 Progress is progress. ^^ Even if it doesn't affect me, as a British conscientious objector. (*hug*)

About time. I can't believe women still aren't in the draft.

No, I don't believe this is right. Women are not as capable as men for this job. In fact, the military shouldn't even have women there in the first place. Men are far more rational thinking and much more physically capable for the job than women are.

Good night! What on Earth is happening to our military?

I think the issue there is that we extremely unlikely to use the draft again and the young generations rarely worry about it, so it's hard to drum up the support on the issue. From an equality perspective, it makes sense, but the military no longer has any real interest in conscription. The difficulties with conscripts in Vietnam are well remembered (This is also why judges can no longer waive sentences in exchange for enlistment), and the military considers modern warfare far too technologically complex for conscripts to be useful.

To put it more succinctly, subjecting women to Selective Service would be fair, but the battle is pointless to fight because we aren't going to use Selective Service again.

The fair thing to do would be to do away with SS entirely. An anachronism if ever there was one.

Oh definitely. It is a horrible thing to put young people through, especially when it is unfairly targeted at one gender.

Inertia. Not a lot of people are fighting against Selective Service, since registration is very easy and all you have to do, and very few people are really worried about getting drafted. So, there isn't much push against the system. In the abscense of serious opposition, the system continues.

Personally, I'm amenable to discontinuing Selective Service. We don't even need the SS system to hold a draft, in the extremely unlikely situation that we have to, and SS costs money to run.

I definitely do think they need to separate male and female units. Although, I think as long as women can meet the expectations for combat, then they should be allowed to fight. There are physical limitations, but that doesn't mean there's no role at all for women in combat.

It's allowing more people who are willing and able to fight for their country to do so.

You're more than welcome to your opinion of who you think should be allowed into military service or not, but I don't think it's MY place to tell badass women (like this) whether or not it's their place. A woman's place is wherever she wants it to be, and I think it's an amazing step forward that the US military is allowing women into all combat roles for the first time. Now, if we can just get the US Military to allow ALL transgender people to serve as well, we can make even more progress.

    Damn, it's about time...

That's one more step towards actual gender equality I suppose.
Well, If they can actually do it right...

I'm for it, but I don't think you'll see many women in combat. One reason... our much lower testosterone levels.

Oh god no. For all the talk about women as a distraction, separated units are worse. You end up having to train two command structures for the same thing because the two groups can't serve together, which is a massive headache and a liability in the field, you end up having to unfairly limit females' careers for lack of opportunities (you basically just banned female sailors from sea duty, among many other things), you end up giving females the message that they can't roll with male units and are therefore not as good, an attitude that breeds mediocrity. I don't see as how removing the issue of heterosexual encounters really justifies all of that.
