From my understanding of Canadian political history, the Canadian equivalent of George W. Bush was Brian Mulroney in the 80's and into the 90's. In fact, shortly after he resigned, this happened: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_federal_election,_1993

Harper is more of Ronald Reagan without the charisma. He got average people to vote for policies that screwed them silly.

I already predict Trudeau will be kicked out within a year, someone better will take charge

Basically spot on. Harper's a bit more tyrannical though. Cheney was probably behind everything Bush did.

It takes 170 seats to form majority and the Liberals are currently standing at 183. It's bye-bye Harper

Hurray! My boyfriend will be elated when he sees the news tomorrow of how big a landslide it was. Though he and his parents moved to the US when he was 12, and he's strictly nonpolitical, he's always told me that he hated Stephen Harper.

What happened to the NDP? They started off so strong and were in the lead for 3/4 of the campaign. A few weeks ago they started losing steam and it went downhill from there

Mulcair wasn't the greatest leader; pandering to Quebec and having a weak military platform kind of turned a lot of people off.

I was 8 years old when Justin Trudeau's father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, won in 1968, thus started a 15-year reign during the late 60's and most of the 70's.

I remember when our new prime minister-elect was born in 1971 (on X-mas day no less - the joke was "just in" time for X-mas). This is one of the benefits of living long enough: seeing some pretty incredible things develop...

My 19 year-old son voted for the first time today, I'm a beaming dad too...

Too bad about the NDP, what a defeat, but a very good lesson about what happens when you give up being who you are in order to pander to the "moderate" vote, they should have stayed true to themselves.

So an unexpected majority government; the canny Canadian voters have spoken...it has been a long time since I have heard the term: "Prime Minister Trudeau"!

I've been following the seat count religiously for the past hour. I'm so glad a new government's in, but I'm a little concerned about Trudeau's experience, or rather the lack thereof.

Also, I think FPTP has screwed things up for the NDP. It's rather sad, given they seemed to me more popular than the current distribution of seats would indicate.

Indeed. Another majority government with only 40%...

Trudeau did early in the campaign promise to make proportional representation a thing. However now that he has won a majority I think it's unlikely he'll do that.

Politics confuse the hell out of me, to say the least.

I want to keep an eye on this though, because compared to the majority of the world Canada has some mighty fine laws.
Unlike where I live, I bet it's even legal there to keep ice cream cones in my back pocket! Outlawing that here was silly.

They say it's a free country here... but... why?! :tears:

Joking aside, I like to keep tabs on it because I'd love to move to Ontario on a few years.
The weather is more my style, and laws are ironically much less oppressive than "land of the free" here.

I'm quite glad Harper is out, but I am a little sad that I won't be able to make jokes about his hair anymore :frowning2:
