Proposed bill would render Supreme Court same-sex marriage decis - WSMV Channel 4

Republicans in Tennessee have introduced a bill in the state legislature that reads in part,

Not only this, but when the legislature reconvenes, Republicans are also going to try to officially make Tennessee a theocracy by making the Bible the official state book.

The worrying thing is whatever happens to those bills, they won't do any harm to the careers of those proposing or backing it. As I said in the GOP debate thread, Republicans should be embarrassed and disgusted that their party has been reduced to this.

I'm actually surprised this didn't happen sooner.

I really wish they'd go ahead and enforce the ban on incest because THAT's how we end up with shit states like Tennessee...

Only major flaw, that bill is easily overturned by the constitution. State legislators don't have power over the federal government. This is just like the idiots soverign citizens that think that by saying they are their not a citizen, but a person, the laws that apply to everyone else don't apply to them.

Nullification is Unconstitutional, they tried this with the ban on automatic weapons in Tennessee and Alabama, SOCTUS laughed at them.

Did anyone back in the day propose a bill like this to restrict marriages to the same race? If so, they'll be stuck sputtering "yeah but, yeah but..." until every sensible person leaves.

Thing is, these are the people that probably believe two people populated the Earth and everyone was incestuous with eachother.

Tennessee ought to try and become part of Canada, they could just use the Notwithstanding clause in our constitution to pass this regardless of federal ruling. Not that Canada would really like to have Tennessee in it though most likely..... Not to mention its lack of geographical proximity. And come to think of it actually, since marriage is under the purview of the Federal government in Canada they probably couldn't actually pass this bill anyway, so hoorah, Tennessee can continue to bless the United States of America with its wondrous bigotry.

Same. I dare them to try, and then see the same amendment they're pointing to for their justification shut them down like the NYC power grid in a legendary thunderstorm. They can take it to the Supreme Court if it gets that far.

And if they announce secession, then more power to them. Technically, states are allowed to secede from the US. And honestly, if that's what needs to be done in order for the US to progress, I'm all for it.

Now I want to see this. Imagine the new currency they come up with and the governments and the code of law and all the ridiculous but required things to run a country...

It would be fun to see.

Tennessee seceding would probably be the worst decision for that state to make. Geographically they don't have much ways to offer themselves imports and they don't have enough production sites to sustain the state for long. Plus it's obvious the US would restrict all access to and from Tennessee and place an embargo on them. There would be no hope for them alone so they would be even more doomed then they already seem.

Honestly, I don't even get what they think they are going to accomplish at this point. The supreme court already ruled. Over half of the country believes that same sex marriage should be legal. Our current president supports it as well.

If you don't think gay marriage is right then, just don't get married to someone of the same sex. Just let people live their lives, and you live yours, its really that simple.
