I've been listening to the song "Take Me to Church" for a while, and have read many discussions about it. I noticed that the majority of the comments on the song are either about supporting gay rights, or homosexuality being a sin. So, what are your views on this song and it's video? If you don't know what song I'm talking about, you can find the song/lyrics/video on YouTube or basically anywhere on the web. I would love to hear more about this topic.
It's been a while since I've seen the video or read anything about it but I'm pretty sure Hozier made it to show the hatred gays face in a lot of places (Russia) and how churches in general are hypocrites for their treatment of gays
I think the song is about the churches and the hatred and discrimination the gays face and how they are brutally beaten and even killed
A big part of the song's meaning is about condemning the discrimination gays face from generally homophobic places around the world like Russia (referenced in the music video), and generally homophobic religious institutions like the Catholic Church (Hozier's Irish so he grew up in a place with a lot of Roman Catholicism influence). However, what makes the song even better is that it uses the church metaphor to compare worshipping a church to loving somebody sexually, but in a positive light, that it's okay to be sexual and intimate because it's a natural part of the human experience, and that nobody should be ashamed of that. I actually got to see Hozier live this July at Central Park when he was on Good Morning America. He was awesome! I also recommend you check out the rest of his album, especially the song "From Eden." You won't be disappointed!
Love that song. I felt like it changed my life when I listened to it the first time. And then proceeded to listen to it for two hours straight. I listened to an interview with Hozier where he said it wasn't exclusively about churches, but about all discrimination and hatred that gay people face.
Yes, but that's the situation in recent times. The fight for gay rights and gay marriage has been moving at a surprisingly fast rate around the world in the past few years. Thankfully Ireland is one of those progressive countries, and their successful gay marriage referendum proved that. Go Ireland!
I heard this song a few times and i like it, but listening to it i didn't have idea of a topic it brings. The video i watch give it a bigger and deeper sense. I like it more now.
I avoid this song because I already know what it's about and I can tell the meaning is made very evident just by watching the video. I like more subtlety in my music, especially when it's such a depressing subject but that's just me.
Thanks to everyone who has replied so far! I'm actually surprised that there hasn't been a discussion (or at least a large one) about this song yet. I really love it and I think both the music and the video are beautifully done. I love hearing opinions from people here as they are really well thought out and deep rather than an overly religious person trying to gay-bash....
