Ha, jokes on them. I got 9!

But seriously, where were the real classics? Not a single volume of One Piece in sight.

    It's indeed an odd list.

9? Out of the hundreds of books I've read in my lifetime, I have only read 9 of these!?

I've got 20 and that seemed short. More than a few of them are on my list. I agree it's an odd list and also there seems to be some repetition. Chronicles of Narnia is on there but so is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Along with both The Complete Works of Shakespeare and Hamlet.

I got 22. What's really frustrating is that Catcher in the Rye and Handmaid's Tale are both sitting in my room, waiting to be read.

I haven't read Kite Runner, but I did read A Thousand Splendid Suns, and I fully expect Khaled Hosseini to go down in history as one of the literary masters.

    I didn't like it either.

It is an odd list because it's a list that's been tampered with to full meme potential.

How Do Memes Start? A Case Study: 100 Books in Facebook. | PurpleCar

According to the above website, it's been around since at least 2009 and was altered from BBC's Big Read list from 2003, a user-generated popularity contest of books that had readers nominate their most beloved books. BBC didn't make the list up themselves and they never thought so lowly of everyone.

The two lists differ by 37 titles, and the differences brought in those weird pairings (Hamlet and the Complete Works of WS; all the Narnia Chronicles (but LW&W was in the original list). The original BBC list has Harry Potter 1-4 because 5-7 weren't published by the time the list was voted on and published. The "fake" list has "Harry Potter series" since by 2009 they all were published.

That said, I've read 50 of the "Fake List" and 40 of the BBC Big Read list.

Does the BBC assume nobody had high school English class? I read 7 of them just at school.

I got 33/100 which was not a surprise to me at all! I feel as though the number could have been higher considering being homeschooled all through school and doing a TON of reading. However, I'm only 22 and that list won't go anywhere!

    23...

It could've been 24, but I can't remember offhand if I've read The Secret Garden or not; I'm having a strangely vague memory of it...

For the heck of it, I retook the test including books I thought had been read out loud when I was growing up. My father was big on the classics (part of this, I think, was he felt inadequate not having read certain books). With that, my score jumps from 13 to 34 (and might be higher). Although, in many cases, I honestly remember nothing but the title of some books.

I've read 16 of these, but remember only about 8 of them, so take that for what you will.

I'm surprised the Bible is on there. Not because of it's influence but due to the fact, more people cherry pick out of it than read it entirely.

I've read 20 and the Bible right through 4 times, at least. However, I'm a lot older than most of you, so should have read 40 by now.

Uhm, 12? I might have inflated my answers, since my memory is crap, but I remember at least skimming through half of them. I hope some of these continue to be taught in school and at home - people say books are going the way of the dinosaur, but not if I can help it! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I got 9. Too bad though, I've seen some in the list that I've been wanting to read. >.< My favorite by far in my list is Brave New World.

Oops, forgot to mention that the Bible was one of the 37 titles in the "Fake" list that replaced a title from the original BBC list.
