I think the principle behind it is that if all of us have a lot of breadth of learning we become both more enriched as people but also it allows us to make connections that wouldn't ordinarily be made if we stuck to a more narrow field of study.

Atm I'm studying at TAFE (kinda like uni but a little more indepenant i guess) but i'm doing most of the work online because i live so far away from the nearest tafe(uni is even further :/. I study IT atm mainly networking but it covers a large area of potential IT jobs.

Well, it is not an extensive broad study. We are talking lower division introductory courses. It is not as though the Art student is taking Multivariable Calculus. They would often take a basic mathematics course. The Statistics student, on the other hand, might take a basic writing course.

The purpose behind the general education requirement is that Bachelor degrees quite a number of fields in the U.S. aren't sufficient to become professionals. If you decided to pursue a degree in Biology that did not have a general education requirement, but found yourself unable or uninspired to pursue an additional Masters, PhD, or MD then you would be largely unemployable. The mindset behind the general education is that should you not remain in the specific field that the degree was focused on employers will still know that you have been educated in areas at a sufficient level.

There will also be 20+ courses in each category so outside of meeting writing and mathematics requirements students aren't really focused to take anything specific. You would simply have to take a course that relates to government or a course that relates to history. Etc.

Graduate degrees, however, have no such requirements.

I barely pass those Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Dose adjusting thingy in Pediatrics, Geriatric, Liver and Renal Failure pts... Including interactions and stuff

I meant i like chemistry and maths but that thing doesn't even make sense to me at all :confused:

this is why i'd like to stay away from internal medicine. Too many drugs for me to understand and memorize :eusa_naug I'm dumb, i now my limitations :icon_wink:grin:

So this thread prompted me to (finally) look up how university works in the US. I never quite got it. Probably still don't.

But anyway, where I go to uni, you just choose one thing and take all the classes that come with that thing. No majors or minors and few electives. So I'm in electrical engineering and this semester I'll have classes with ugly names like:

    - Sensor Electronics
    - Electrotechnics and Power Electronics
    - Signals and Mathematical Transform Systems
    - Telecommunications
    - Computer Science
    - Mathematics

And, of course, 2 languages and one or two other humanities-oriented classes to balance it all out, because otherwise that's way too much science-y stuff for this girl.

I've already graduated high school, but I'm staying for better marks/classes.

    U-level English (again)
German 3/3 (again, lol. Just for practice)
    Latin 2/3
    Latin 3/3
    Challenge and Change in Society
    Spanish (at another nearby school)

There actually is one more class I believe. This isn't technically my schedule as it sits, because my guidance counsellor screwed up and I need to fix it.
