So since it's that time of year again, I decided to make this thread so everyone who is of school or University age can list the classes they'll be taking either this year or just the first semester if at a University that only does scheduling on a semester basis. So to start things off, I'm going to be a first year student in University majoring in Political Science, and these are the classes I'm taking the first semester.

Political Science - American Government - 3 Cr.
Classical Humanities - Classical Mythology - 3 Cr.
    Sociology - Social Inequalities - 3 Cr.
Social Work - Intro. to Social Welfare and Social Work - 3 Cr.
Statistics - Intro. to Statistical Reasoning - 3 Cr.
Journalism - Career Explorations in Journalism - 1 Cr. (9 week class)

So yeah, that's my schedule of classes for the first semester. I already have 26 credit hours going into college with me due to high school dual credit classes, so by the time the Spring semester begins, I'll be a second year student if all goes according to plan

So, what classes are you all taking this year, and what class are you most excited about?

Ugh, classes. I'm taking physics (mechanics, also a lab course), US history, American government, world literatures, and intro to psychology. Not my favorite lineup, but still better than last year.

Economics and business.. nothing else. Most students in the UK study one subject, two at most if it's a joint degree, like what I'm doing.

Starting my GCSE's this year, I'm taking Music, German, Biology, Chemisty and Physics (taking them seperatley counts as a choice because you have more lessons), and History, as well as the main subject you have to do.

Latin poetry! Ah, I'm so jealous. I am really diggin' learning Latin.

I graduated from college already, but I'm auditing Latin III (!) this fall and I'm so pumped about it.

Woah, I'm really confused now. Do Americans not just do a degree in one thing? That doesn't seem very practical, why know a few things relatively well rather than one thing very well? Anyway, I'm starting year one at university in a month, doing a computer sciences degree.

Bachelor degrees in the U.S. are fifty percent broad and fifty percent specific. You can attend schools that do not require general education, but they are considered less desirable by employees. Additionally, double majoring, pursuing two bachelor degrees at the same time, is very common in American universities. As well as pursuing a minor, specialization, or certificate along a degree. So, it is very common for someone to be studying a science alongside journalism for instance.

Yeah, it's pretty stupid. Sometimes, it's like you have to study stuff to meet your general ed even if it doesn't relate to your field (like a biology major having to take a renaissance literature class or an english major taking trigonometry). I get trying to be balanced and all but you're paying thousands of dollars for your degree over here, why not study what's going to be practical and useful and save time on the degree?

As for me... unfortunately, probably going to have to take the year off. But depending on the transfer requirements for the university I'm applying to, I may make up the rest of my classes at the local community college.

That certainly is an eye opener, but it still seems illogical to me. Why does it matter if an engineer knows the full works of Shakespeare, or a drama student can work out the angles of a triangle? Why do employers find a mixed degree more desirable? Here in the UK you CAN do a 50/50 degree in two subjects, but they're only really done if you don't plan to follow your degree onto a specific career, or the subjects are related (biology and chemistry, for example).
