I've been giving public speeches/presentations since I was young and I always was taught to use gestures. When speaking "normally," I don't really use my hands unless I need to drive home a point.

Yes ! I mean, not all the time, but when I get to excited on the conversation or when I'm telling a story, yeah I talk with my hands.

I gesture as much as an average politician does.

I rarely do. I just don't find it natural or necessary most of the time.

Most of the time I do in informal conversation, yes. More often than an average guy. Ironically, the only time I DON'T use my hands is in a formal speech or job interview because I am so focused on my words.

I sometimes do, but whenever I notice I'm doing it too much I'll keep myself from doing it for a while.

Exactly. I only gesture when I am explaining something to someone to accent my words.

I don't talk much, but when I do, my hands are left out of the business

Quite a bit. It depends though, how I'm feeling and stuff.

    Depends on two things really:

    My mood.
If I have a particular objective.

I've noticed when I do use my hands, it really helps with placing emphasis on a point or phrase. But more importantly, it's a tool to collect the gaze of others and to drill in certain key phrases or words.

Using your hands has it's place. But you do it too often and it loses it's luster. I like to think I've found a fine balance.

I hardly ever talk with my hands, it just doesn't come naturally to me. No wonder I suck at public speaking.
