I'm not at all surprised that Microsoft has chosen to offer Windows 10 to the community so (comparatively openly).

Windows 8 has been a spectacular failure because of the user interface changes that alienated so many users.

It seems like a lot of OS projects have been doing that lately, and the backlash has been considerable. The change from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3 made me absolutely furious and caused me to jump to KDE, where before I had given it a try and thought that it was stupid.

So it's not just Microsoft. But because Microsoft has such market share, an absolutely huge swath of people hate them over what are really minor changes that people could easily get used to. But people just hate change itself.

That's about as "fair and balanced" as I'm ever going to get about Microsoft. So enjoy it while it lasts.

I don't dislike windows 8, I thought it was fine. I never had any issues with it honestly.

But free OS? Count me in :3c

The upgrade to 8.1 was free. I guess this is just the new microsoft model - release upgrades free because people won't pay for them. I will certainly upgrade, but that's just because I like having the newest and most up to date thing, regardless of how rubbish they are.

    It was not a failure.

And what is the point of updates if it stays the same?

I've been a Microsoft Insider for over a year and have been using the preview builds of Windows 10 for just as long. Believe me, Windows 10 is above and beyond what Windows 8 tried to be. The desktop interface is much better integrated. It's a definite improvement with a modern look.

Microsoft has a unique way of naming things.

Dating back to 3.1 times. 3.1 was a full release of Windows but out of cycle so it was named 3.1 instead of 4.0.

The same thing is seen in Windows 8.1, however, instead of Microsoft doing what they did since XP which is Service Pack's, there's no Windows 8 SP1, etc.

In short Windows 9 is Windows 8.1, a full release of Windows but out of cycle (every three years which Windows 10 happens to fall on). It stands to reason that the next version of Windows that's in cycle would be Windows 11 or if it's not in cycle, it would be Windows 10.1

Registered as well for the free Windows 10 upgrade, not sure if it will be free forever to the masses or just those 8.1 users who sign up. Now I have to read up on it's features and driver compatibility.

I suspect a lot of features will become paid services, how else is Microsoft going to make up the revenue?

Even though I have Windows 8.1 on my desktop, I don't really like it. It tries to be two OSes in one and it can't seem to figure out what it's supposed to be. That's why I like the differentiation between OS X and iOS. They're separate OSes for separate purposes. Hopefully Windows 10 will be more "desktop friendly".

It is absolutely desktop friendly, but it's adaptable. So you can have your desktop interface and be able to also switch to tablet mode if necessary. Touch support is excellent, OSX can't even begin to match Microsoft's efforts in making computing truly mobile. iOS is a pathetic alternative to the full featured version of Apple's operating system OSX. Android is fragmented as hell and has to be specifically tuned for each configuration. Windows 10, on the other hand, is a far more adaptable and full featured OS. I've been running it for over a year. Believe me it's good.

That's what I was thinking. I think they should be penalized for skipping a number.

Never used anything past 7 here...but I don't like to spend much $$$, always updating computers...would rather travel, buy dildos, go out to a fancy restaurant, many things. To me, an OS is about as exciting as getting new tires for a car: this expense that rolls around here and again, but really doesn't do much to change your life.

One explanation I've heard is that 9 would be problematic for confusing application software Windows version checks due to the old Windows 95/98 names. I heard this only once, and it may or may not be true, but does sound reasonable.

Windows 10 comes out tomorrow, everyone.

I will be upgrading, although my OS X machine remains my primary computer.

I'm waiting two months before upgrading from 7 to 10, so that all my software and the OS it's self gets proper bug-fix time.

I buckled and reserved an upgrade, largely because my computer is a gaming machine and integration with Xone players is a good idea in my ears.
