What do I think of it?

    I try not to.

It's amazing how such horrible, cheesy books and films become so popular, while better written, more complex ones languish.

Technically I haven't read the book, but I've heard it read. And I'd read a few chapters of Master of the Universe. I haven't seen the movie though.

I have an issue with the fact that so many women think Christian Grey is the perfect man when he's an abusive asshole with serious problems, and his relationship with Anastasia is so wrong on so many levels. He basically rapes her several times.
I also think it may cause people to associate abusive relationships with BDSM in their head, which annoys me. And I hated that Christian's affinity for BDSM was linked to his past, having been molested as a child by an older woman (basically raped and traumatized), as if one can't just like BDSM because they like it -- there has to be a "trigger".

Beyond that, well, I think it's badly-written, uninteresting, with unbelievable and annoying characters, and it kind of makes me sad that it's got such a huge following when there are so many better books out there, but I'm not responsible for what others read and I wouldn't really care if it weren't for what I said above.

Agree 100%. He looks more like a grown up brat with a silver spoon than he does a serious executive.

I think it would be one of those pointless movies like "American Psycho," in which Christian Bale was also NOT hot.

    It's fucking horrible.

It's a rape novel shamelessly masquerading as a BDSM story. The writing is deplorable, the characters are robotic, and Christian completely ignores safewords, one of the most important rules in BDSM relationships. He also straight up rapes her, and bullies her into doing what he wants.

    It's disgusting.

Why don't the people who read it just watch porn? I assume they only read it to get horny. I don't understand how a book can make you horny.

    It's just so much no.

I am ashamed to admit I read it when I was younger and it was newly out, I was VERY confused about life in general at that point.

It's written shittily. Yeah, it's a word now. I write some, mostly just for myself, and I can, and have written better stuff than that.

I think there should be a 50 shades of Gay book, but better written and more realistic.

And I'm not giving it any more of my time today.

I heard or read that this movie plummeted at the box office. The trailers make it seem fairly slick, so it must have cost some money to make. I just wonder how they'll make out in the long run. I'm sure it will do ok ... in the long run. Some of the big box office disasters have wiped out studios in their wake.

I was staying away from this movie and book because of what people say, but I watched the movie last week and it isn't so bad.

I've heard a bit about it. I never have read the book nor watched the movie. I don't think I'm going to watch it either. It's not really my type of movie.

The book is just horrifically written. The writers have no discernible talent whatsoever and it's an affront to literature. I got through about one chapter and could not stand to read any further. How this book ever managed to get published is beyond me. My sister is a Year 2 teacher and her 6 year old students write better creative stories. I have no desire to see the film although against the general consensus I do find Jamie Dornan attractive.

The book was just bad. Poorly written, ridiculous, vapid. Another story with a female protagonist who sits passively at the center of it all, like Twilight. I couldn't finish it. I haven't seen the movie.

Because you're hardwired for visual stimulation, we're not. Well...not completely anyway. This book is written by a woman and marketed to women and for us, stories ARE porn.

Technically speaking, men and women are different. Men are more visual, while women are more turned on by written pieces or emotions.

As probably a typical thinking woman, I can safely say I think porn is garbage, featuring ugly people with terrible acting skills. I can only watch it if It's guy-guy and that obvious still does nothing for me.

There is a porn movie based on this book, you can find it yourself! :icon_bigg

And I agree with several posters here, words can be arousing. Visual stimulation gets boring after a while, it is repetitive. All the "ahh", "ohh", "yehawww", just meh!. With words, you can describe the arousal of the people involved in excruciating details, and with a little imagination. Mind-blown!

The stories about women being confusing must be exaggerated, because I understand what you mean about stories being porn. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:
