This is soooo depressing. Although we hadn't completely eradicated the virus, we have had a lot of headway in treating HIV, then this just happened. I am so pissed off about this.

This really makes me want to self-loathe. I hate this virus with every fiber of my being. I had an extreme phobia of this disease for many years after being with my fwb and not knowing where to get tested, yet thinking I could have HIV and that I was dying. The straight world just has no clue about what MSM really go through. End rant...

I saw this and thought about starting this thread. I am also very pissed. About 10 years ago, people were polled as to whether they think they'd see HIV eradicated within their lifetimes and many more people believed that they would. With news like this, I'm not so sure. There's still hope, though. The most important thing people need to remember is that it's still here. For a while, maybe about 5 or so years ago, there were articles and media talk about how people, especially younger people, seemed to have almost forgotten this is a danger that still lurks. People need to be aware and need to be careful.

It shouldn't. Finding testing sites is easily done. The thing is to find ones that are anonymous over confidential. The other thing is to know how different sexual behaviors are stacked in terms of risk. Some people carry on, either with protection or engaging in much lower risk activities. Being under the influence of anything and then having sex, for example, is never a good idea. I'm not addressing this to you and it doesn't apply to me. I just know that, either IRL or anecdotally, people have wanted to or have actually gotten sloppy under these conditions.

I realize that testing sites are easily found. The testing I do get is not anonymous but confidential. I just hate having to go through this and have fear ramp back up again. I have been tested as has my bf, but that thought runs through my head over the fact he could be cheating on me. I have been really hurt in the past with the situation back in high school. I have gotten over it, but it just was scary to think how easily it could have been to contract HIV. The condom had broken while I was bottoming, and I could have easily been infected. Besides, not that I would EVER advocate BB, but condoms are not 100% effective. It just makes me so nervous.

And yes, I would never get drunk and have sex.

I am 31, and I remember Magic and the commercials talking about HIV when I was 10 or 11. Trust me, it made a huge impact. I think it's part of why it took me forever to come out because my family(esp. my mom) thinks that any gay sex means you'll get AIDS.

    Awful.

And yeah, AIDS helped push me so deep in the closet I didn't even know anymore.

I still believe this was intentional and man made.
    The perfect storm.
A military playing blacks ops after WWII.
    The cold war.
    Non accountability to anyone.
All the endless funding in the world.
    War games, that "what if".
Secret biological warfare development. How many ways to kill your enemy, other than a gun.
Yes, I believe this was developed in a laboratory as well as other biological weapons that we will never know about.
And not specifically designed or created against the homosexual community per se, but someone at some point realized its potential. Someone with the ability to open the can and let the monster out.
And the innocent, those affected and infected from blood transfusions and non homosexual infection? Casualties of war. The act of war always assumes casualties not directly targeted.
That is the price to achieve the goal.

HIV could be just a fluke, a creation of nature, but I think that doubtful.
Not this perfect storm. Not the speed it infected the community.
And not the way our government reacted, or resisted reacting, until great damage had been done.

Naw, no one wants to think, or believe, or accept that any dark force hidden somewhere beneath the surface of normality could ever intentionally target their own.
But this would not be the first time in history the evil of the act was considered justified by the goal.
    Hate is nothing new.

The origin of HIV actually was a fluke, an improbable story of genetic mutations combined with an improbable series of events that led to this pandemic.

This summary gives a good account of what seems to have happened.

    From the link:

As for conspiracy theories, or HIV being the result of contaminated vaccines, this article gives a good summary of the various, and generally discredited, theories.

Well, it won't be the first time a virus or a bacterium has mutated into something deadlier.

I had heard that it originated from a man eating the brains of an infected monkey.

Scientists announce anti-HIV agent so powerful it can work in a vaccine
February 18, 2015 - Fetched from ScienceDaily (original source: The Scripps Research Institute)

The text on the site is scientific (and may thus provide difficulty for those not used to words like RNA, co-receptor, and so on). But that didn't refrain me from posting it. :icon_bigg

As someone who works in biotechnology, and specifically in antibody vaccines and therapeutics, I find this really impressive and a very hopeful sign, but a word of caution, what works in primates may not work in humans. I hope they start human clinical trials as soon as possible, this has the potential to radically alter the prevention landscape!

Did you mean to post this at a white supremacist site? Cause that's some real ignorant, bigoted garbage right there.

It's indeed true that it may not work in humans, but like you, I think it has the potential to really change things! I found it too interesting to not share. :icon_bigg

Even if it's only partially effective, it's a good thing, as it'd reduce the number of susceptible people in the population, thus reducing the spread.
