I chose a very strong liberal but I see myself as a socialist. While I would choose a Democrat candidate over a Republican candidate, I see all U.S. politicians as money grabbers that will constantly do whatever they can to limit the rights of those they represent. An optimal government in my opinion would be one similar to Canada or Sweden.

There is probably only one thing that would make me "conservative": the death penalty. While I don't think we need to reach China levels of criminal justice, I do feel that they're are some instances, such as human rights violations, where the death penalty should be used.

Conservative when it comes to finances... low taxes... low public expenditures..., liberal when it comes to social issues, or more laissez-faire, so to say.

    None of these really fit.

The best way to describe my political identity, is:

I'm too radical for the left, too progressive for the right.

Mildly liberal. I like liberal social views, but I'm pretty moderate on economic views.

I really do hope you see the irony of that statement.

Although the USA only gets to pick between 2 idiots, while the UK has a whole menagerie of political parties to pick from, the USA's seems to be more complex.

Im not sure if Liberal and Conservative means the same things in the USA, but in the context of the UK's politics, I prefer the Conservative party.

On a site note, is the USA technically not a totalitarian/communist country, because other parties besides the select 2 aren't allowed to run for presidency?

I am a strong conservative republican. I say I'm firmly conservative on 85% to 90% of issues.

I don't find it terribly ironic. If you have mass murderers, I think the death penalty is deserved.

Okay, I had no idea. I took a quiz (GoToQuiz) and got this:

    You scored 0%.
a hardcore liberal. You believe in governmental action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all, and that it is the duty of the State to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. Believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Believe that people are basically good.

    --
It doesn't really surprise me, being a secular humanist, but I thought I was going to be a bit more conservative than this.

Yeah, makes sense! Because in the Netherland, my party is "progressive & slightly right", not on the left side. Other definitions of left and right perhaps?

    Haha. (*hug*)

3rd party. While, I take ideals from many different ideologies, I mainly tend to identify as a member of the Green party with Libertarian leanings. However, when most people ask, I usually just mention the Green part. Why make some people angrier than need be?

Death penalty is a violation of one's human rights.

What about them? We aren't justifying murder, just saying that another murder isn't warranted. That's the irritating thing about human rights. They're inalienable.

Exactly what rights do you imagine an execution restores to the original victim?

The easy answer: Independent. The more accurate answer: Purple (i.e. I vote for both parties :lol:slight_smile:.

Some ideas I believe in are:

    • Welfare reform that uses a gradual formula that doesn't "cut-off" benefits at a certain specific dollar amount but is more of a glide; also, I propose a way that welfare doesn't disincentivize work. How we do that, however, is the crux of the issue. We should be a country that every person who works can have all of the basic necessities covered; those who cannot work because of injury or illness have a basic standard of living; and all other to be provided with the opportunity to seek gainful employment and receive government assistance while they do so.
    • Strong military with both offensive and defensive capabilities that can become an expeditionary force if needed. For some reason, I also feel that we should continue to maintain a strong network of bases abroad.
    • Working with industries that pollute a lot and incentivize them to innovate and be more environmentally friendly.
    • Move towards a single-payer healthcare system; maybe fund it by raising the FICA tax portion employers contribute.
    • I am not in favor of the minimum wage only because it is too broad for the country as a whole. That said, perhaps we could make the Earned Income Credit or other benefits for low income folks have "locality pay-like" benefits based on regional cost of living.
    • Immigration is a tough one. A more "reasonable" plan that could fly would be to offer something akin to "blanket amnesty" like the 1986 law that was passed by Reagan. We could also throw away some $20-30 billion to build that goddamn fence with Mexico some people want. We could also make it so people who are legalized under this scheme cannot become citizens for x amount of years and are subject to deportation if convicted of a felony and cannot sponsor relatives till they become citizens.
    • Decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and leave that up to the states. Give funding for medical marijuana and any and all controlled substances.
    • LGB rights are a given, but I would add that perhaps we can let the states decide but invalidate Section 2 of DOMA which would mean states have to still recognize out-of-state same-sex marriages as legal because of the Full Faith and Credit Clause . As for T rights, treatment for transsexualism (both mental and medical) would be fully covered under the single-payer healthcare system. The only problem I see is that we might not have enough qualified/willing doctors to perform "bottom surgery."
    • Abortion: I have mixed feelings.

These are just some ideas I am for.

I'm going to be honest. I don't know enough about, say, our economy to classify myself as "strongly liberal" though on scientific and social issues I know I am left-wing
