What is it with many people here learning/trying to learn Dutch? What is so interesting about our language? There are only two very small countries (and a few colonies) that have Dutch as a primary language. What is the value of knowing this language instead of more used languages?

    My native language is german.
My best wishes to everyone who tries to learn it

I speak english (obviously)...Yeah I know I make some mistakes, especially with tenses and some grammar stuff...but as long as I can take part in conversations, talk to people and watch movies in english I'm happy with it :icon_bigg

I learned french in school and I can understand and read a lot, but with speaking I'm really out of practice :eusa_doh:

I also learned a bit of spanish but I just know some words and sentences to have smalltalk...not that much.
And when spanish people speak I nearly understand nothing. They speak so damn fast
But maybe I should start learning it better. I love this language...it sounds so smooth but with kinda temperament and I like the pronunciations :icon_bigg

I've grown up speaking English but I suppose my 'native' language is either bengali or Hindi... I can speak both of them but not nearly as fluently.

I'm definitely best in English, although I took German for many years in school. When I was younger, we had a number of relatives in Germany and Austria who would visit from time to time, and some of them had very colorful stories that I couldn't follow, so I took German classes constantly to stay fresh and understand them. Like the colorful great aunt who was a nun in East Berlin and would go across to the west side to pray, and smuggle things back in her habit to sell on the black market.

After changing college majors every semester for 3 years, I finally had to major in something, and since I'd taken German constantly, a German major was what would get me out the soonest, so that's what I did. Sadly, the older relatives are all dead now and I really don't have many opportunities to use it anymore.

  11. None sadly, but I'm learning Japanese, so hopefully that's the first language other than English I will speak!

Spanish , french , chinese (manadrin ) , enough arabic , Portuguese amd italian .
Theres always value learning another language. It opens your mind to new cultures and can be a segue into even more langauges . No one language should be more important than another in learning value the uses of any langage are a separate issue).
eg, dutch is spoken in the nertherlands , belgium, parts if germany and france , surinam and other west antilles island nations . It can also be useful in indonesia and is mutually understood woth afrikaans. Due to the comminality of the alphabet it can help alot woth german as well.

English, French, German and Spanish. Those are the languages I can use if needed (with more or less skill and ease).

I'm Swiss (Romandie, french speaking part of Switzerland), so french is my mother tongue. I know a bit of English, and a tiny bit of German. I also speak Maths. (∀x∈ℝ, ∃y∈ℝ | (x-y) = 0.)
