I live in "Jefferson," and honestly, I'm surprised it's more republican leaned.

Almost every single person I know here voted for Obama.

  3. San Diego isn't really that red. In fact, it's just 50-50.

Yeah, California can become its own country with the economy we have. Farming makes up a part of it, and we have Chevron and HP here.

And this can't be done too quickly.

Shit, I'd sell the place to the highest bidder. (If any)

You might have to pay people to take it.

That oil mine? Yeah right. Would go for billions, if not more.

First explicitly (plenty that border on it implicitly ) corporate-owned government entity, anyone?

Well, this proposal would definitely benifit rich folk in San Francisco. That's really about it :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: (and the entire reason why it's being proposed).

That oil mine will run day, and be an arid, hot, water-starved wasteland!

Let's sell Texas now, while the gettin's good. All the place has been is trouble.

  8. Mexico has universal health care, gay marriage in some parts, and no death penalty. Texans will be angry.

How about instead of selling Texas, you let it succeed from the union?

I think it would do California an incredible disservice.

Tourists from around the world are aware of and flock to "California". We love it because of the diversity that a single state has to offer (from the beaches, to the national parks to the big cities like San Fran and San Diego). If you split it up into six states it is going to lose some of that appeal and recognizability.

  11. Yeah, I take pride in living in California due to its great diversity. If this passes, the people in the new states of Jefferson and Central California will pay extra for our produce since they are grown in Silicon Valley, West California, and South California.

is there a law that that charges entrance into the next state for commercial trucks?
I don't see why the prices would go up, you'd just be going through a couple new states, and it'd be the same distance

  13. I've heard that a tax is placed on goods that are being transported to a different state. I may be wrong though.

that tax shouldn't be there then

I've also heard that tax goes up on things that are out of state.

My biggest concern with all this would be education with the UC and CSU systems. A lot of people (myself included) depend on residency to have a chance at affording college. This whole thing would really screw that up.

This is unlikely to go past the voting ballots. But if it does happen...

Give them better names and split Alaska and Texas too! We must have a a catchy number of states!
Then we'll talk, and I'm likely to move from Silicon Valley to Jefferson.Jefferson's the only new proposed state that's got a decent name, and I'm doubtful that any part of California would ban gay marriage, for being right wing does not automatically make one a social conservative.

Um, we kind of already fought a war about the question of state succession.
