I posted a thread asking what gay guys think about bi guys. That thread got deleted for no good reason. Is this a bug or is it against the rules?
My concern is that often we have threads on EC that have the effect--whether intended or not-- of inviting people to gang up on one another like "what does group X think about group Y?" So in particular, threads about body types, bisexuality, and feminine men almost always invite someone to say something really hurtful, and they almost always do. Usually, threads are started in good faith, as I believe is the case here. Other times, they clearly just urge people to get their hatred on. Regardless of the thread being started for a fundamentally good reason, somebody will eventually get on and say something just painfully abusive, like "I'm afraid a bisexual would dump me for the opposite sex." I believe the staff is right to be concerned about this, especially since it happens to these threads over and over.
I think it was unfair that they had to completely delete it. They could have just locked it. I see plenty of threads bashing bi women and they hardly ever get locked. I often see ten page threads that basically bash bi women. How is it fair that one thread asking about bi men gets completely deleted? I didn't even see any flamewars. All I saw was people stating their opinion.
This happened to my thread on gay conservatives. Not sure why that was deleted. I never said anything offensive, but many people were bad talking conservatives. As a conservative myself, I don't mind. Free speech FTW!
1. Your thread was not deleted, it is in moderation. As Mirko mentioned at the very beginning when you asked, the staff is currently discussing it. 2. Have you ever reported any of these threads you have seen that bash bisexual women? The staff only has so many pairs of eyes and can only see so much on our own. If you see something that is so offensive, you should report it to bring it to staff attention so we can look into it.
I could do some searching for you to document what I'm talking about, but bashing on bisexuality is a fairly common conversation here. The thing is, it's kind of difficult for me to document, because some of the threads I have expressed serious concerns about in the past have been removed, not just locked.
Having moderated several boards before, it is a hard job. Indeed, indeed. I would have loved to see that.
The freedom of speech ideal is not applicable to a website centered primarily around support. Being mindful and considerate of other members on this site will always come before allowing members to rant about a controversial topic. There are plenty of places on the internet to speak one's mind.
Umm I'd post a thread asking how to do this but I can even figure that out, how do I post? ---------- Post added 20th May 2014 at 10:57 PM ---------- Or is that how i post?
This is the thin line that we have to walk. Politics is quite a heated topic around here. While they do need their support as well, we need to keep the needs of the entire community in mind as well. Flame wars do not serve the community at all. It does not matter if they are started by more liberal members, or more conservative members. We have had to lock many threads because of this. So, when we see reposts of the topics that have previously led to threads being locked or removed from the forum, we have to tread carefully so that the situation does not repeat itself. If threads about political topics remain civil, then they are left intact and kept open. When people start to go off on each other, and things begin to get reported (or we notice it), that is when the staff has to step in and decide what the best course of action is. If we can leave a thread intact and remove problematic posts, this is what we will do. However, sometimes threads have gone too far for this to be an option, so that is when a thread is either removed or locked.
You have received a PM about why your thread was removed. If you have any questions, then you can direct them to ask the staff.
