Speak by Louisa Hall (science fiction about artificial intelligence)

And if anyone wants to join the upcoming August book club reading of "Tales of the City" by Armistead Maupin, lemme know on my wall or be on the lookout for that in the threads (the first official discussion will start on August 7).

    The Coldest War
    (The Milkweed Triptych #2)
    by Ian Tregillis

Halfway through this one. I would have finished it by now had I not mysteriously broken my kindle.

For those interested, it's a revisionist sci-fi take on the events of WWII (and the following conflicts) in which the Nazis managed to bio-engineer super-powered war orphans, and Great Britain retaliates with wizards and sorcery. That's right, let that sink in. The biggest surprise is that despite the batshit insane premise, the books are not nearly as ridiculous as one ought to think they would be. The second biggest surprise is that they are actually good (in my humble opinion) and meticulously plotted out. It's very refreshing to read a trilogy that was clearly intended from it's inception to be one and takes advantage of this to greater effect; so far, nothing feels tacked on, nothing makes you think the author is just churning pages and needlessly elongating a story that ran out of steam on the first book. It has all been smooth sailing and the sense of natural progression (and escalation) is persistent well into the second book. Speaking of which, I should also note that, as the title suggests, this one takes place during the Cold War (probably my favorite global "conflict"); so yeah, the author is not stalling either.

Overall I'm really enjoying myself, and hopefully this will continue to be the case by the time I'm done and hop over to the last entry of The Milkweed Triptych (Necessary Evil). Recommended!

I realized I posted here once but couldn't remember what was the book I posted. So well, the last book I read was the Martian by Andy Weir. Was one hell of a ride, and makes me feel in awe with space once again. Extremely recommended for any hard sci-fi fan. No alien, no warp drives, no antimatter generator. Just one guy and his genius using all resources he has on hand to make something plausible.

Currently reading Crome Yellow by British author Aldous Huxley. Crome Yellow is his first novel, originally published in 1921.

    Damn, that does sound good.

For those who are interested I'm hoping to gather a group of people to read and chat about The Martian for the September Book Club! Those who've read it already or reading it for the first time will be most welcome! Let me know if you're interested (there's a thread or throw some info-mud at my wall).

Currently reading: Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson, hard SF about a generation ship reaching its destination of another habitable planet after more than 150 years.

The first two volumes of the AKIRA manga by Katsuhiro Otomo which I just so happened to pick up on my recent trip to Baltimore, Maryland. It was the best part of that trip, considering the fact that the part of town I was in looked and literally smelled like piss. No offense to anyone living there, but I really didn't like the place, myself.

I blasted through "The Grand Design" by Stephen Hawking and "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn a few days ago and now I've started reading "Röda Rummet" (The Red Room) written by August Strindberg. I haven't read that much this summer so I'm trying to make up for it now.

I'm thinking I'll try my luck with some Shakespeare (again) after that. I always had trouble comprehending much of his plays in English though. So we'll see how that goes. It's kinda like studying when I read it. I can't really enjoy it, cus I won't understand it if I don't read it like really slowly.

If it's the book by Cory Doctorow, there's a sequel called "Homeland".

Ape and Essence by Aldous Huxley. It's quite difficult, but extremely thought-provoking. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it. It's a dystopian sci-fi, with quite satirical elements (like most of the things I read).

I feel incredibly sorry for the people who don't read books. :frowning2:
