I have this to ask: if this man had stolen something, or broken some other Commandment, or really done anything other than get married, would the decision be the same? If it turned out that he worked at Planned Parenthood, of all things, would he still be fired?

I bet you that he could have been forgiven by his church for just about anything, but God forbid he marry another man!

I tell you, Christians today are not very Christian.

Don't summarise all Christians being that way. I know many churches in my area who accept LGBTs for who they are and I know Christians who accept LGBT Christians.

Here is a more in-depth article about the situation by the Washington Post.

One of the more relevant bits from the article is how LGBT people are being fired the moment it's learned that they've gotten married. It's apparently all too common, once word gets around as this man unfortunately found out.

What I find infuriating is that there will be a group of people who look at this situation and they'll defend it. However, when the shoe is on the other foot - such as with the former CEO of Mozilla - then it's wrong. It's an assault on "free speech".

The Catholic church is standing up and saying these are their values. Yet, apparently, those of us who disagree aren't entitled to have values of our own or it's an assault on their "free speech". What a nice little Orwellian double standard.

Something I've always been curious about. Although I totally hate discrimination like this to LGBT people, is the church not just following what the bible sets out, the bible being the cornerstone if Christianity.
In fact doesn't Leviticus 29:13 state homosexuals should be put to death. I guess we should be grateful that at least they are not advocating that.
I have always been curious how LGBT Christians reconcile this in the bible with being LGBT.
I'm really not trying to offend, but it can't understand occupying these mutually incompatible positions.

I would be genuinely interested if someone could educate me on this matter.

    Happy days

I am not a Christian, but I think the Bible very explicitly states that homosexuality is a sin and the attempts by LGBT friendly churches to make it seem like the Bible doesn't say that aren't very convincing.

Anyway, I don't think this news is particularly shocking. I wish the musician was able to keep his job, but its a Catholic church, what do you expect? I wish the Catholic church was more accepting, but their doctrine just doesn't allow it.

The Bible states that homosexual incestuous acts, homosexual ritual sex, homosexual rape and homosexual adultery are sins. The Bible never states one sins just because you happen to be born LGBTQ.

Very sad news. I don't want to say where, but I think the music director at one of the churches I previously went to is gay.

    ---------- Post added 12th Apr 2014 at 12:20 AM ----------

This quote by the diocese spokesman is apt: "This public act is unmistakable and verifiable and serves to cause scandal in the church and confusion among the laity."

The real scandal is how the church leaders dealt so callously with someone who has devoted so much of their time and talent.

There are roughly a total of 7 verses that pertain to such a topic.
This is my understanding, I am not trying to re-invent the wheel, but this is how I have come to view such things.

2 are from Leviticus, but Christians are not under the 613 Levitical laws.

1 is from Deuteronomy, but it is talking about shrine prostitution and sex worship/work. It goes on to say that any earnings from such acts are not to be brought in.

1 verse is from Romans, and talks about the punishments for a person who rejects God. So if someone loves God, in my own mind logically, they are not subject to such punishments because they never caused the first offense.

1 is from 1 Corinthians. This verse has been widely mistranslated, but is often rendered as 'abusers of themselves with mankind'. To me when I read that, my first thoughts were drug addicts, addicts in general, abusive relationships, general abuse, rejoicing in group sin and immoral acts overall.
Regardless, speculation isn't very kosher, and there are reasons why this verse has been widely debated. I'll add an anecdote at the bottom.

1 Timothy 1:10 follows the same suit as above.

Sodom and Gomorrah are cited in various places but there is only 1 direct reference to any homosexual conduct. It is in Genesis and is used as a punishment to Lot's guests, in a group rape and kill fashion. The sins were too numerous to count, anything bad could, and did happen. Incidentally the main sins seem to be inhospitality towards strangers, which would make sense when you try to rape them.

"Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good."

    Sounds like North America.
Make of it what you will.

    -----

Definition of Sodomy: Sodomy (/ˈsɒdəmi/) is generally anal or oral sexual activity between people or sexual activity between a person and a non-human animal (bestiality), but may also include any non-procreative sexual activity.

That limits sex to 1 basic act, otherwise you commit sodomy, gay, straight, Christian, or atheist.

In regards to the word arsenokoitai in Romans and 1 Timothy, here is an excerpt.

"ARSEONOKOITAI (singular: arsenokoité) is a FEMININE word. If it applied to men at all, we would see the forms ARSENOKOITOS, -OI--but we never do.

There are only THREE uses of the word ARSENOKOITAI in ancient times, and they are six centuries apart.

    1. In the Sybelline Oracles, dating 6th Century BC, it says, "The ARSENOKOITAI from the north will abduct our children."

    2. St. Paul's use, which you mentioned.

    3. In the writings of St. John the Faster of Constantinople, he says that ARSENOKOITAI is something that some men do to their wives.

If it's something a man and woman can do, it's clearly NOT homosexuality, it is?"

I don't read or speak Greek, so I can only go off of what I read, but clearly there is something more to this word or verse than people assume.
In Greek there are terms/words to denote 'same-sex' practices. The word Paul used is peculiar to say the least.

    Another excerpt:

"here in the Bible you might find the word homosexual used incorrectly:

The Hebrew word kedah means temple prostitute and is sometimes inaccurately translated at sodomite or homosexual.

In 1 Corinthians, sodomite or homosexual are sometimes used, but they are incorrect translations of the Greek malakos which means something closer to effeminate or the Greek practice of pederasty, which is older men having sex with boys and is not consensual gay sex between peers.

1 Corinthians also refers in Greek to arsenokaitai, which appears nowhere else in the Bible or in Greek writings about homoerotic sexuality, but probably means male prostitute.

Jude 7 sometimes refers to homosexual flesh that the Sodomites pursued. This is an inaccurate translation of hetera sarx which means, literally, strange flesh to describe the flesh of the angels who were sent by God to evaluate Sodom and Gomorrah.

In Timothy 1:9-10, translators sometimes use homosexual for the original Greek words, pornoi, arsenokoitai, and andrapodistai, meaning male prostitutes, males who hire male prostitutes or the slave dealers who procure them."

Here are a few short things to think about:

-If we do not follow Levitical law, then why do we assume beastiality is bad? Everyone knows its bad, yet it was never re-stated or warned against? Unless it was, and we miss-translated it...

-If we follow the Bible verbatim, then I guess being female is a plus, since the Bible only specifically mentioned males. Some might say that you could assume females are counted as well, but now we aren't following the Bible, otherwise we could assume other things right? Can't have your cake and eat it too.

-Maybe the whole LGB issue is vague on purpose, so that Christians will diligently seek the Lord and understand His Word to the last tittle. Seems like a good test to me, most just fire and forget the words they read and copy/paste scripture to suit their purposes.

-How can a person love Yeshua, God, and be gay? Even evil people recognize sin, its evident. So why is there such an issue regarding LGB people? Also WHY are 'Christians' ATTACKING others, rather than loving them, REGARDLESS of a person's sins, we ALL sin, and are ALL equally condemned. Sounds like Satan has a grip on a lot of 'Christians', causing division and dissent, a few of God's MOST hated acts.

Sorry for the long post, if anyone wants to chat regarding Christian topics, or LGB, and T issues, by all means message me ^^

I know there's a FtM group in London that meets in a church. So clearly there are some good ones out there, they're just overshadowed by the majority of crappy ones.

If the Catholic church is like the southern baptists, they accept you as a sinner, but only if you agree that you are one. Meaning you go to them and tell them you feel badly about your alleged sin and want to change.

Good point. The Catholic Church has gone to great lengths to cover up true crimes and still keep priests in their post yet a marriage is worthy of being fired.

This is my understanding as well. The same prohibitions go for straight people and lust is bad too. Sadly the verses have been twisted to hate on us and it's been done for so long that people who don't question it don't know any better. In fact, the verses have been translated incorrectly in some cases. The translations have changed over the years. There are far more verses about straight sexual acts but that doesn't mean being straight is a sin.

As for this article, it's the church's loss and hopefully a good church will hire him and they can enjoy his talent. He likely knew he'd be fired, but his happiness is worth more than the job and I applaud him for his courage. I hope more talented people (gay and straight) leave discriminatory churches. More churches will eventually realize they are wrong and they'll become closer to the example Christ set for us.
