American cockroaches get called palmetto bugs, but to me palmetto bugs are the even bigger ones that have ridges going down their backs. A cockroach of two finger-digit lengths or more is a pretty unremarkable sight around here. Anything smaller to me is "little," though still plenty creepy. I know a guy in Massachusetts who claims never to have seen a cockroach. I guess it makes sense considering the area and how cold it is, but for me that's like never having seen a cat. It's just a part of life down here.
I never saw one till I moved to Maryland. Then, you see them all over...it was/is pretty scary, given all the germs they spread, crawling around on rotting food, turds, sewage and stuff...I don't like 'em one bit.
We actually don't see them alive all that often... it's more common to see them dead and lying around the house

I do feel so sorry for you. Around here the big wood roaches like to try to come into the house when it storms. They are disgusting disease carriers....and the worst part is...THEY FLY!
I always thought that was totally unfair. I mean, they're already huge, ugly and disgusting, but when i saw one of them fly, I nearly crapped my pants. It just isn't fair! Next thing you know, they'll have the right to vote, and take over the world... Stop roaches now!
It's not that they are infected, it is that they crawl through disease ridden places and inadvertently spread the filth.
