At what age should it be legal for people to view/purchase pornography?

  1. There should be no age restrictions.

I was 12 when a mate showed me some porn on his computer I admit it was straight porn but he showed me how to find & hide it of cores. when i got home i did my own searches it took ages before i found the porn i wanted to look at.as for age limitations i guess the law is always going to say 18+ & yet its not difficult to find .

I'm torn on this. In many ways, I think 18 is actually a pretty sensible age. Here's my argument: People in their early-mid teens are still starting or going through puberty. For many "later bloomers", that may not be until 15-16-17. And pornography, on the whole, can be pretty powerful and pretty impacting on people in their formative years.

While there is some pornography out there that portrays relatively healthy sexual experiences and portrays safer sex and healthy sexual relationships, most does not. For example, rates of HIV infection among gay teens had declined consistently for a number of years up until about 5 or 6 years ago. That coincides perfectly with the time period that most of the major gay porn production studios started abandoning safer sex scenes that had been the norm for 15+ years. So we had a lot of gay young and mid-teens constantly seeing bareback sex, and it clearly had an influence on their decisions to practice safer sex.

Additionally, I think that when pornography is readily available to young-mid teens, they tend to masturbate when watching porn, rather than masturbating to their own internal fantasies. There's abundant data to show that the constant and consistent use of porn can have a negative impact on sexual experiences in general, and specifically on masturbation and orgasm.

If people have an opportunity to develop their sexual selves without ready access to porn, and learn to masturbate to fantasies instead of being dependent on watching porn to get aroused, they end up with a healthier and richer sex life. They also set their expectations and understanding of sex based on real-world experience rather than the artificial and often unhealthy portrayals seen in pornography.

There should be no age restriction. Nothing wrong with porn. Its just a masturbation aide.

    Warning: very America centered post

The legal age being 18 doesn't make a whole lot of sense in states where the age of consent (when you can legally have sex) is lower than 18. In those states, you are old enough to legally have sex but you are too young to see other people having sex. To my knowledge, the age of consent is only 18 in 12 states so this old enough to do it but not old enough to watch idea occurs more often than not in America.

Also, I dislike laws that are this pointless. You can easily find porn thanks to the internet. It is so easy you can do it on accident. This law is pretty much unenforceable. It can really only be enforced if you buy pornography. What is the point of having a law that is almost impossible to enforce that most people don't follow? It could show public disapproval on younger people buying/viewing porn, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the disapproval probably won't stop them.

I understand the issues that can occur with pornography but I struggle to see how this law is the best way to deal with those issues. I think that at the very least the age to buy/view porn should match the age of consent

No age restriction. To keep an age restriction is like banning people from watching other people eat. Sex is natural.

I selected no acre restrictions for viewing pornography. But as for purchasing it, well that should be at least 18 years.

    View all ages, purchase 16+.

You can't really make watching porn illegal. It's so easily accessable.. I don't see how you can do that. Plus I don't think there's anything wrong with wathing porn; it's normal and healthy to start being curious. At what age that happens is person dependent. I do think parents should talk about it with their kids, though, because it's important especially for young people to understand the difference between porn and real sex.

I think purchasing porn should be regulated, though. Not sure why, just a feeling. 16 would be a good age.

i don't think there should be an age limit on viewing, as one would be (is) Unenforceable, however I think you should be 16 to purchase because as someone said above that is the age of consent most places.

Is there anyone on this forum who actually waited 'til they turned the 'legal age' before ever viewing pornography?

Pfft, there were porn magazines before that, and the lingerie section of clothing stores magazines. Everything to do the job. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I think 12 is pretty acceptable. And just in case you choked a little bit on your coffee, yes, I'm serious.

That's an interesting point. I don't watch much porn, because there isn't much that corresponds to my own internal/imagined fantasies, which seem much richer and more varied by comparison. With porn, I almost feel I'm being forced into some kind of ready-made 'box' or set of limitations. The only porn I've ever liked has been 'amateur'; 'professional' porn seems kind of corny to me, phony, and not at all arousing.

All in all, I like to explore my fantasies by myself and with my partner. Sometimes, I get ideas from porn, but mainly, my imagination is much more powerful.

I don't want pornography so I really have no say, but I think there shouldn't be any age restrictions to viewing it, of course it's more of a social rather than legal issue.

Not that anyone really buys porn anymore, but the legal age for purchasing should be 15-16.

I say 16. Of course online, it's unenforceable, (been watching/reading pornographic material since I was about 10) but 16 seems a reasonable age for the buying of such things. It amuses me that one can have actual sex legally at 16 but not buy porn/sex toys to masturbate with.
