I also need to add that many of my heroes are not LGBT, but our straight allies. These are people who stand up for our rights when they really don't have to. Their consciences tell them to do what is right, even though it is not at all self-serving. Here's a short list:

Brad Pitt - Gave over $100,000 to fight California's Proposition 8

Daniel Radcliffe - Supporter of The Trevor Project

    Cyndi Lauper - PFLAG Activist

    Rob Thomas - Equality Activist

Coretta Scott King (deceased) - Fought for gay rights as civil rights

Willie Nelson - Outspoken in his support of marriage equality. Also recorded the song "Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other."

Here's a good place to look, too. 33 Straight Star Allies Who Support LGBT Rights

Hannah Hart, as my signature implies. Not only do I find her hilarious, but she's so insightful. I'm happy I discovered her.

Honorable mentions to George Takei and Ellen.

Sophie Wilson, I don't know if I consider her a hero but she is pretty damn awesome in my books. If someone knows who she is without looking up her name, you are pretty awesome too.

Tegan and sara quin <3 <3
In case you don't know, they are amazing twin musicians who are both openly lesbian. They aren't afraid to be open about their sexuality despite any effects it might have on their career, and they often voice their support for lgbtq rights and were even on the cover of the advocate this spring!! Sara wrote a marriage equality song too called I was married and the lyrics are so cool
Now we look up in to the eyes of bullies breaking backs.
They seem so very tough (it's a lie, it's a lie)
They seem so very scared of us.
I look into the mirror for evil that just does not exist.
I don't see what they see (tell them that, tell them that)
Try to control the pull of magnets to another...
Anyway they are my lgbt heroes.

I should add, weren't Leonardo Da Vinci and William Shakespeare thought to be homosexual as well? If so, Steve remains top of my Modern Day heroes, but those two definitely take the top of the list for Historical.
