Perhaps I should post this in the technology subforum, but it's not a very technical question and I assume more people might see it on here. Our subscription to Spyware Doctor expired today and at the moment, the immediate choices are to just renew it or [since there is already a shortcut] subscribe with McAfee since the cost is the same, which is around $40. However, we're really tight on money at the moment and was wondering if there are any other dependable programs which are easy to use and cost somewhat less?
I have heard goodthings about Malwarebytes which is free. It is what I use between subscriptions and I have never had a problem with it. It also got rid of a nasty trojan I had a few months ago that disabled my usual malware protection, so it is obviously pretty good
Do people still pay for antimalware services?? Just download Microsoft Security Essentials, which will give you more than sufficient realtime protection, and then run a scan with MalwareBytes (as suggested above) every two weeks or so. All the paid ones are way more trouble than they are worth.
Will definitely look into MalwareBytes, at least. I'm about as luddite as they come so I've never heard of this one before let alone other free services..... Ridiculous: If I go with MSE, I presume all I'd have to do is download any updates from time-to-time?
Yeah - it integrates in with Windows Update so it should do it automatically (or notify you when they are available, depeding on how you've got your updates set up). This is provided you are on Windows XP/Vista/7 - MSE already comes with Windows 8 I believe.
Ended up having MSE downloaded, as well as uninstalling the previous programs, and seems to be working very well so far [laptop appears to be working even a little quicker than usual (Knocks on wood.)] Thanks for the tip!
I use a bunch of free anti-spyware programs. SpyBot Search & Destroy Malwarebytes Anti-Malware SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition All free, and sometimes one program will find things that others miss. I also have a free program called SpywareBlaster, which helps immunize you from getting spyware in the first place. (SpyBot S&D also has an Immunize feature to also block you from getting spyware)
Try AVG - they have a free version and a paid version. I do the paid version but my employer does the free version and he's an IT guy and feels it does an adequate job.
I use the free ones too. Ad-aware Super Antispyware They are decent and didn't take up too much space.
