It fun to watch the press conference. You don't see too many where they the person speaking translates as well.

Whenever I hear the Canadian Mounted Police I can only think about cops riding horses, which isn't very intimidating to say the least. Really awesome, but not intimidating one bit.

In French they're called the "Gendarmerie Royal du Canada" which sounds at least a bit more threatening... (Ironically, I just learned that the Canadian Mounted Police and the Gendarmerie are the same...why are they named so differently I wonder).

Who knows but I dunno, would you want to be chased down by a guy on a horseback when you're only running? No I don't think so. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I dunno... maybe somebody felt that a direct translation to French just didn't have quite the same meaning to it. It's happened before. Check out the national anthem (originally written in French). The English and French versions are completely different when translated to the same language.

Hi. Canadian here. Now don't trust me on this, but I'm fairly sure that GRC and RCMP mean just about the exact same thing. But yeah, you'll find that things can rarely be translated smoothly between french and english. When you see the french slogans for things, compared to the english ones (and vice versa) it's funny how different the meanings are.

As for the anthem, I guess we just needed words that sounded okay with the tune. And they mean roughly the same thing. Just... organized differently.

Not necessarily. Any western country is the target of violence from more easterly extremist terrorists, especially Al-Qaeda. I think it was in 2006 or so, when an attack was foiled in Ontario.
The 15 men that were caught originally planned to detonate truck bombs throughout the province, fire into the public, storm many public buildings in Toronto and massacre anyone they see, and break into the Parliamentary building and behead the prime minister.

    Quite right

I'm so glad the RCMP caught those men. I think sometimes we take our safety for granted here because we've never had any terrorist attacks happen. They're always thwarted in their infancy as with the one this week. I don't know if that speaks more to the fact that our law enforcement officials are particularly vigilant (doubtful) or that terrorists in Canada aren't very bright lol. I think this one was more scary because it happened within a week of the Boston bombings.

What amuses me is that the Canadian "royal anthem" aka God Save the Queen (The UK's anthem) is translated into French. There is a verse of God Save the Queen which isn't sung anymore, but was written in Napoleonic times, it literally had lines like "Destroy the French" in it, which amuses me somewhat.

I think they can be a bit intimidating. I believe they're used for crowd control and maybe even riot control over here, although I've only seen them on TV.

    Amazing.
