The situation of the Russian Federation is quite sad really. The Worlds first Communist state, An ideology that is supposed to accept everything human and be equal and the true embodiment of freedom. Falls from grace only to come back as the most conservative capitalist state in the world. I hope Putin will come to his senses and try to at least make the country a bit more open DX.

I'm sure things will change for good with time, however this is one large step in the wrong direction =/

  8. This will probably cause a major decrease in the tourism to Russia. Mr. Putin will change his mind in no time.

I wonder what deviant sexual acts Putin gets up to while he hunts naked? Does medvedev come with him? Or is it just Putin and the bears?

    Sorry.

... And that's why I sometimes hate being (part-)Russian*. It's just painful to see how it's hijacked by a yet third gang of charlatans, who are gradually turning it into a Saudi Arabia with Orthodoxy...

    * Been in Russia proper only twice though, as a kid, back in the USSR days.

I live in Russia for fifteen years, i'm happy that i'm russian. I am glad that i live in this country!
Yes, unfortunately, we have a lot of homophobic people. But not all such! Homosexuals did not have to organize pickets near schools, this is wrong! Here are the consequences of their actions!
All the talk about homophobia in Russia is very exaggerated. Yes, they cannot marry. Yes, they cannot organize a gay pride. But that's the only thing they are forbidden. They still pose a family, have children, have a job, friends! Not so bad!

P.S.Sorry if I wrote something wrong, I do not speak English, used a translator. Do not judge strictly. )

We don't judge. But I think you have a fair amount of things confused, namely that it's "exaggerated". It isn't.

and to think Tchaikovsky was a big ole 'mo too ... and he's almost a state-venerated saint in St. Petersburg. What a big step backwards!

I see what you mean. But don't you see a flaw in this reasoning? This way Russian gay community is completely dependent of whoever is right now "at the helm," and let's face it, THEY see anti-gay sentiments in the population like something useful to them. An easy way to appease "Autocracy, Orthodoxy, the people" contingent. By the way, author of this slogan was an embezzler and probably gay himself. /*In a stereotypical Russian noble accent*/ "You see, the slogan is for hoi polloi... Serfdom for them, gold and beautiful boys for us, we can handle it, we're blue blood* after all. But serfs... All this Western free thought is like poison for them, a sure way to moral decay." Do you think anything really changed in 200 years? Do you think that there's no moral crusaders with rentboys on fast dialing in Russia?

I just searched "Petersburg Gay School Pickets" in Russian, and I wish I didn't do that. Every headline dripped poison, every sentence spread old lies about the nature of homosexuality, every word implied not a peaceful protest but mass orgy. No even mildly supportive articles on page 1 of the results. Apparently, gays in Russia aren't allowed not only to marry or organize parades, they have no right to present their side of the story. Then again, who can tell truth in Russia?

It's very Russian trait to keep it quiet, to not to carry away trash from the cottage**, to hope that if we keep silence, the powers would simply leave us alone. I myself am like this. We view Americans is a nation of snitches. But that never worked, didn't it? If no one tells the truth (yes, truth to schoolchildren too!) somebody would teach them lies and hatred. And when they grow up, they would gladly vote for return of Article 121. Singing praises to Dear Leader for his wisdom and morality.

Whatever happens, easy to criticize seemingly eternal hypocricy and prudishness of Russian ruling classes and common people gullibility and timidity from far away. I can understand people who don't want to risk making the situation worse and going to jail by attempting something like picketing schools. But I frankly see no point in being proud of it, to the point that you bothered to register and post a defense of the very same people who are robbing and oppressing you in the name of moral rectitude.

P.S. I wrote this post in Google Translate in order to check that this post translates back to (mostly) on comprehensible Russian. Sorry to all the native English speakers for all the resulting strange word choices and grammar. I'd just write it in Russian, but since no one on the staff couldn't read the post and check that I did not post something inappropriate, I do it this way.

*For Ennglish-speakers: "light blue" is an euphemism for "gay" in Russian.
** "tell tales out of the school".

Not only the gay community depends on those who "at the helm", but also ordinary people too. People generally always depend on who has power over them. So in all countries. This is the life.
I don't think they use anti-gay sentiments, on the contrary: they come to prevent unrest among the people. Because even if gays were allowed to hold pickets near schools, they still will be dispersed by the parents of these students. Many parents, mostly fathers, approve this law.
Yes, there are people who still believe that homosexuality is a disease, perversion. By law, gays and lesbians do not have the right to marry and to organize gay-parades, transsexuals can get married after the change documents. No one forbids them to talk about themselves parents, loved ones, friends. They will understand them or not, is another matter. It is not a law, the main thing that lies in the minds and hearts of the people.
My parents never told me about gays and transsexuals (about that Пётр Ильич Чайковский was the gay, i have heard only from gays). And what? I grew up and found these people through the internet. I don't hate these people. I love to communicate with them, because among them there are many talented and creative people. I don't like that they are being bullied. I do not support such a law. To hate or love people, unlike you, only your choice. If a person chooses to hate, I cannot condemn him for his choice, but i can condemn for its actions under this choice.
Ok, I understand. I find it hard to communicate in a language I don't know. I am afraid to even think about how looks my English...:icon_redf

Frankly, this whole matter of writing in English so that it would auto-translate into correct Russian is very tedious, and the resulting message does not look good in either language. And these kinds of question require extreme clarity of communication or else it isn't even worth bothering with a reply, it won't convince anyone .

So, yes, I see what you mean, I disagree, I'd like to explain why, but I'm really not sure how to do it...

All right, let's leave the question of whether those who hold power in Russia now are good shepherds of the nation, or a pack of predators cunningly masquerading as "patriots" to get to the food. Let's leave aside the thorny issue of social contract and who ought to have the power over whom. These are important questions, but they're a bit off-topic here.

Let's talk about one funny effect: You say that you never heard Tschaikovsky was gay from anyone, except other gays, and doubt their veracity. It doesn't really matter if this particular fact is true or false, what does matter is that this subject is pushed into the realm of rumour and gossip as a result of exactly this "don't speak about gays publicly" policy. A policy you think is a good bargain for everyone concerned.

And it's not just about some relatively unimportant facts about some celebrity's sexual orientation. Under this rule you can't tell even basic safety rules of gay (or heterosexual!) life without putting them on equal footing with porn, gossip and lies. This is a big issue in the West as well, though not to the same extent as in Russia.

And if you think teenagers don't have access to porn, gossip and lies, or that they aren't curious what that "sex" you are terribly naive.

Want some stories about sex-education, "do it yourself" style? How I had to contain my laughter when some boy a year older than me told us he just heard a few new words for "cunt," apparently so dirty even adults only use them in porn? Yea, they were medical terms like "vagina" or "clitoris" or obsolete euphemisms like "loins."

Or how I had to explain that "orgasm" isn't some material thing inside a girl?
Or how I in my generosity, lent him an anatomy atlas he went all over because there was "penis" in it? He didn't return the book to me, by the way..

Or, how a few years later, his brother claimed that (heterosexual) anal sex was safer because "the girl can't get pregnant, even without a condom?" Not that he had any idea how to actually do it (I knew even less back then, anatomy atlas and "wholesome" Soviet books, well, barely acknowledged such act is somehow possible.) I don't have to explain the most probable consequences of that on this site, don't I?

So, yea, raise your next generation of ignorant misogynists, who think the proper name for your "private parts" is "pizda" or that anal sex is safe. Then don't get surprised when those innocent children turn into drunken swines who are barely able to do their "spousal duty." And gays? Why, with this quality education they'd all just die out of AIDS, problem solved.

There's no such thing as "dangerous knowledge," only dangerous ignorance and irresponsibility. Precisely the things a policy of coy insincerity is designed to propagate.

You know, even those coy and insincere Soviet books acknowledged that normal experience of puberty is vital for healthy personality development. And if "naturaly" kids had it this bad, imagine how it feels like when he's gay? Main problem of a typical gay guy is that upon coming to terms with his sexuality he has all the knowledge and experience of a 12-year old in a 22-year old body. That's where much of the stupid and dangerous things in gay culture come from.

Ok, I might have exaggerated a little, but all the examples are real things I really heard in a real ex-Soviet school.
