Started getting into Carl Maria von Weber yesterday and am quite liking his music so far. Seems to be one of those unfortunate (relatively) well-known names, at least in classical circles, yet hardly ever talked about. :/

I like classical music that sounds dark and gothic.

My favourite is Totentanz (Dance of Death), and I love Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for Organ.

I haven't, but then I've never really gotten into opera. .____. Have you heard the whole work?

Have been gradually revisiting Ravel the last couple days. Mainly listening to some 'old' works like the string quartet, piano trio, sonatas for violin & cello and violin & piano but also visiting 'new' ones [or intending to] like Miroirs and the piano version of Le Tombeau de Couperin.

He's really wonderful, and there is something quintessentially French about many of his pieces.

Here's his Jeux D'eau ("garden water features") played by Martha Argerich.

True, but I also find he has a bit of an edge to his music which seems almost 'un-French?' While he can and does often sound elegant and dream-like, just as easily he can seem aggressive, exacting and even grotesque? in his music.

Just heard the Schindlers List theme again. A lovely piece of music but the connection with the movie gives it a very tragic feel (to me). To really appreciate the music I need to try to listen without making the holocaust connection.

I think that speaks to how complex his music is, having meanings at multiple levels. I like how Stravinsky called Ravel "the most perfect of Swiss watchmakers." In that sense, he made himself distinct, every piece a gem.

Indeed, and I love that quote as well. Also suggests the clarity much of his music has.

Are there any lesser-known pieces of his you particularly care for? Looking at his catalogue, feel I've barely made a dent, especially with earlier works.

His Noël des Jouets ("Christmas of Toys") is really interesting. I heard it one December on a local classical radio station.

Been getting into Schumann today. Have listened to some of his work in the past but for some reason never went all out with him. Started with the Fantasie in C for piano, then String Quartet No. 1, revisited the Piano Quintet and now am listening to Symphony No. 3 ['Rhenish.'] Really enjoyed all but am neutral on the symphony so far....

    One of my favourite ballets:

I was recently recommended Schumann's string quartets by one of my profs. I was really missing out, they're fantastic.

I play piano so sometimes I have to play some classical pieces. I love to play and hear to the Raindrop Prelude from Chopin. One day I want to play some Nocturnes of him but 'till then it's a long way:grin: I also like Pachelbels Canon in d.

Was recommended them a few weeks ago by a friend, and likewise feel I've put them off too long... Which is strange as quartets are perhaps my favorite genre within classical music. Which is your favorite of the set?

It's one of my favourite genres, too. I like the third in A major the best.

Yeah, it's either that or the first for me, but will have to revisit both [just finished the third not too long ago.]
