I think I'm going to come out on Facebook tomorrow night (actually posting a status, not just changing my Interested In). I'd do it tonight, but I'm working until 10:30 and I want to do it when there are people online and I can be close to a computer.
Here's what I want to say...

"It's the end of Pride Month and there's something I need to tell you. In 2006, Neil Patrick Harris admitted that he is "a very content gay man living...life to the fullest," and tonight I am proud to say the same. I'm not hacked or joking, but I am gay, and now you know for sure."
(and then probably a comment on that:slight_smile:
"I'm sorry if I ever denied it in front of you, as I know I did more than once. The truth is, I really didn't think I was, and I needed more time to come to terms with it myself."

So like I said in the title, I would probably chicken out if I didn't post this here. Now I'm being held accountable. >

Sounds good to me. It's honest and publicly announcing that you're comfortable about other people knowing about your sexuality (and at this point, I am assuming you are as well).

Good luck and let us know what happens with the revelation on your Facebook page.

Okay, I'm starting to get cold feet.
One of my friends posted this:
"It seems like everyday there are conflicting posts in my news feed about the gay marriage issue, both sides being close minded and ignorant toward the other's opinions. Well fighting children, open your minds and read this. Learn something. The world won't end if you are less ignorant and bigoted, but it will run smoother. http://www.cccb.ca/site/images/stories/pdf/ministry-ssa_en.pdf"
If you don't want to open it, it's a document from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops saying that while same-sex attraction (they don't want to say "gay and lesbian" because that humanizes us too much, I guess) is NOT a choice - refreshing - and while the church welcomes us with open arms, "homosexual acts" are "always objectively wrong." Also lots of stuff about God intending marriage to be exclusively between a mabn and a woman. So really it's no less misinformed and bigoted than many extremists.

I forced myself to bite my tongue on this one. But then another one of my friends commented with this, and I couldn't let it slide:
"Thank you for posting this, [name]. It reminded me of good things that we all need to remember."

The original poster was Catholic, I know that, but the second one I know to be Lutheran, the same religion as me, and our church prides itself on its acceptance. We perform gay marriages and, for goodness sake, ordain gay pastors. She should have known better. Here's what I said:
"This leans pretty heavily on the "we accept everyone and we know 'same-sex attractions isn't a choice" argument, and that's great to hear from any religious institution, but it also makes it abundantly clear that they still see homosexuality (both acts and attraction) as a flaw. That is just not true, plain and simple, and it can honestly be as offensive as hate speech. Sorry..."

For some reason, this is making me really reluctant to go through with this coming out the way I planned. It's like this couldn't have come at a worse time. I don't think either of them know I'm gay, so I can't really use myself as an argument yet, but I definitely don't want my coming out to seem like a retaliation to this one post.
UGH I JUST WANT TO GET THIS OVER WITH!

Honestly, it sounds like they're all still on your side on this. I'd go ahead and do it. Sometimes taking a stand is when you really find out what you're made of. Go for it!

Oh my god I just did it. My hands are shaking so much I can barely type. Will keep you updated.

update: four likes and one comment after about two minutes ("Yay! I'm sure this status is gonna inspire some people, Sam. You are a great kid."

update: "You're very brave." and an IM "I'm so proud of you!"

    An hour later...
19 likes and 11 comments (3 from me, 2 I've already posted, and 1 irrelevant):
"♥ I miss and love you so! Good for you my friend "
"Love you, Sam. SO EFFING MUCH."
"I love you Sam. I'm proud that you're my friend."
"Cool deal bro, that takes guts"
"I'm glad you've come to terms with it. Keep being awesome. No, wait. Keep being you!"

Thanks, guys! I guess I'm "Out to everyone" now. Wow, don't even know what to say about that, except that I never thought I would be where I am now a year ago. Or even six months ago. This has been a pretty tremendous year for me.

Maybe my last update for now.
Two more comments that make me pretty happy:
"Just one more reason why I love you so much! Welcome to the Club!" (This one is from my lesbian aunt's partner, who already knew. I kinda love her a lot.)
"Even though I honestly didn't expect that, I am super proud of you! Stay classy!"
