Taken from my blog:Contains full story The other day, I watched a film, by the name of Prayer's for Bobby. It's based on a true story of a guy by the name of Bobby Griffith, who was Homosexual. Bobby had told his brother that he was Gay, and his brother had told his Mum; However, his mother did not react well, and tries to get him "cured", (Which is nonsensical, because of course you cannot be "cured" of Homosexuality). After the "treatment" fails, he moves to where his cousin lives in Oregon, where he meets his boyfriend David. Building up the courage, he returns to his Mum and tells her to either accept him as he is, or he will disown her. She says that it's fine, and she will not have a Gay son. He then moved back into his cousin's house, in Oregon; However, only a few months later he threw himself off a bridge, into the path of an 18-wheel truck, which killed him instantly. After this, his mother changed, and started to question her beliefs in homosexuality; She finally accepts gay people, and now she is actually a Gay Rights Activist. If you are Gay, then you don't have to worry about it; Being Gay is ok, and something that shouldn't change anyone's views about you.
Wow, sounds like a beautiful movie. Story's like this get to me so hard because I can sometime see this happening to myself. I love movie's with great messages like such. I'm going to check it out soon. Thanks.
I haven't cried over a movie in quite a while, but seeing Sigourney yelling to be let out of work did it for me. Though a lot of the details of Bobby's life in Oregon was distorted from what actually happened.
I'd like to read the book I started to but didn't finish. I want to see the movie first because the movies always piss me off after a read the book and see that things are changed.
You can buy it on iTunes if you're in the USA. And I love this film sooo much I dunno when Lifetime will release it to DVD though. For now only USA people will be able to own it legally on iTunes. It's I think 14.99 or 19.99.
brilliant movie. I'm sad to say I pirated it, because I've never seen it in shops and it's not on iTunes in the UK. Not out to parents so I couldn't buy it off amazon either.
Saw this when it aired on Lifetime. I agree, brilliant movie. Sigourney Weaver did a magnificent job playing the mom.
This film is like a classic in the Gay Community. It's so powerful, the acting is great, and it doesn't feel like a lifetime movie. It's just a good freakin movie. Sigourney Weaver deserved all the awards she got and was nominated for, from the Emmy to the Golden Globe. I don't think lifetime movies usually make it all the way to the GG's, but it was still great.
I watched it when it first aired. I was very moved and Iloved every minute. The end part at the pride parade made me tear up, I'm not gonna lie.
Same, I'm in Ireland tomorrow there was an Article about it in the Irish Independent TV guide. Wonder whether it will get a big crowd.
I was balling during the movie and I never cry during movies. I also read the book. It only cost $10 used including shipping from Amazon. As with any movie based on a book, there was a lot cut out of the book. In particular the book includes more of the struggles from the mother, and paints her a bit less of a cold-hearted bitch.
