'Gay dog' refused entry to Australian restaurant

    if im reading it right... the vowel in 'guide' /aɪ/ is "raised and rounded in broad accents", though the phonetic transcription given is /ɑe/ which is backed and rounded...
    so, if it rises, id be more like /æɪ/... which could sound like gay /geɪ/, which it says that the vowel there can be lowered to /æɪ/... so, that could explain the mishearing

    Edit: Can someone explain to me please why sometimes when I post things in caps (such as initialisms, which are meant to be in caps and do not constitute shouting) it gets changed to first-letter capital only? It's a bit annoying.

    That's because it's not the original article. The original article was published in yesterday's edition of the Sunday Mail (the newspaper mentioned in the article in the OP's link) and can can be found here.

    I think it's a bit rude to say something like that. This sort of thing can happen anywhere, not just in South Australia.
