"I am Legend" by Richard Matheson

It's a really good story. Mr. Matheson has great way of writing people.

the book of lost things. very dark and disturbing in some places. it also has facts at the end on where all the classical fairytales came from and how they originally went; for example the ugly step sisters mutilated their feet to try and get their feet to fit the slipper in cinderella. worth a read if you like dark twists on classic tales.
about to read the animals of farthing wood, i grew up on the tv show back in the 90's and felt all nostalgic when i saw the cover. ill post if i think its any good.

Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. Took me longer to read it than it probably should've, more due to laziness than difficulty. Overall it was a good reintroduction to the Bard and while it was good enough, probably would vastly enjoy it more on the stage. Looking forward to revisiting him further and, currently, waiting on a collection of his sonnets to keep me interested for the time being.

    Naguib Mahfouz, Karnak Cafe.

The story is set in a cafe in Egypt, during the 1960s, making references to the 1952 Revolution and the 1967 war, and Egypt's defeat in that war. T

The story, told through the narrator's conversations with the visitors to the cafe, and what he overhears, follows three students who find themselves imprisoned based on false political accusations. Their imprisonment, and treatment, highlights everything that went wrong after the 1952 Revolution. The novel, through a conversation between the disposed government official who oversaw the imprisonment and torture of the students, and the visitors to the cafe (including the students) ends with the political choices that Egyptians faced after 1967.

The 1967 defeat and its effect on Egypt's society (including disillusionment), its national pride, were very well portrayed by the author.

I am in the middle of several. My daughter and I read to each other every night. She is reading Alan Dean Foster's Into The Out Of (one of my faves for ages but first read for her), I am reading Terry Brook's The Sword of Shannara to her (also old fave for me and new to her). On my own I am reading Drift by Rachel Maddow and Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling.

I am loving sharing the books with the kiddo. Both books are still fun reads but I have noticed so many "ooohhhh he got that from ___" in the Sword of Shannara that I never really noticed when reading it before. Drift is fascinating if you are a news/politics/history nerd like I am and R.M. is an awesome author. Casual Vacancy is actually starting out slow and a bit blah. I had just read her book The Cuckoo's Calling and switching from it to C.V. was a huge let down. I am hoping it picks up soon.

If you are looking for a truly excellent read grab the Iron Druid Chronicles series by Kevin Hearne. We read them not long ago and I want to finish at least one of my books so I can start the series again.

Promise Land, Crusader State: The American Encounter With The World Since 1776 by Walter McDougall.

Absolutely excellent book for anyone interested in American foreign policy.
