    It's most definitely a double-standard
But, I mean, we had it coming... it's too bad the gay guys are the ones sufferring though

Like, if a hetero man sleeps with multiple women, he's cool
If a hetero woman does it, she's labeled a slut

I suppose in general its much more socially acceptable for girls (straight or gay) to hug and hold hands in public. When Queen Victoria made sex between two men illegal in the commonwealth countries, she said that the same wasn't true for two women. She didn't believe that it was physiologically possible for two women to have sex with eachother, and so did not ban female homosexuality. I suppose that psychology of thought still exists to a certain extent.

Whilst it's not true for me personally (as I'm sort of out, but not out at the same time), I do sort of thing that being male and gay is a lot worse than being female and a lesbian. Not I'm not saying this is always the case, I'm sure being a lesbian is just as tough as being gay, but this is just going by my thoughts on the subject, so perhaps I'm a little ignorant.

Males being the more dominant gender in some aspects doesn't help the situation. If a woman were to man up that would probably be seen as a good thing, but if a man were to have a feminine side, then that man would most likely be bashed because of it. Also women being as open as they are can do all sort of things like be touchy around each other in public or go off to the toilet together (I used to see this a lot at school), but if guys were to do that, then you know what would happen.

I can't be asked to go into more detail, but you get the point.

This. While homosexuality is frowned upon, femininity is never exactly shown as being a great quality - esepcially in men.

These days, guys are like very strong north magnets - to put them together in any slightly sexual way requires supernatural forces.

Totally untrue. Discrimination exists towards both gay men and gay women, but in different forms. Gay guys are called names and harrassed, while gay girls are dismissed as loose straight girls trying to make a scene and are pursued by straight guys.

Please, let's not play this one-up oppression shit.

I think this is true and there's several factors at work in this.

First being the (quickly waning) percieved impossibility of women having a sexual nature. Sex was something men wanted and women gave into. So why in the world would two women have sex with one another? There's no man there to be demanding it. Thus women could to be far more emotionally and even physically open with one another since it was de facto non-sexual.
Interestingly, in the times when homosexuality was considered more or less an impossibility for men as well then men could express a much more intimate form of friendship without raising too many eyebrows. It's an increased awareness of homosexuality combined with homophobia that's lead to the current "rules" of friendly expression between men.

Another factor is the result of women's rights earning women the right to cross-gender expression. Before women's rights movements really took off a woman in pants with a butch expression was subject to mockery and (sexual) threats as much as a man in a dress might be. In modern times, thanks to the hard won battles of the early champions of women's rights, women can now express themselves far more masculinely. Questioning a woman's right to be masculine or to admonish her for being un-ladylike is a sexist assertion and women's rights called attention to that. On the other hand men never had such a movement (aside from perhaps the hippies) and so it remains normal to question a man's right to be feminine and to admonish him (through mockery, through beatings, through murder) for failing to be "be a man".

Then there's the factor of girl-on-girl being hot. As pointed out that does go both ways. It seems that straight people of either gender will fetishize gay people of the other gender. I imagine this has been around in a hush-hush sort of way since forever (after all 1 hot thing + 1 hot thing = 2 hot things). Straight men were able to mainstream their fetish first as their sexual interests are more catered to. I really don't think it's the best way to get "support" from mainstream society hopefully we'll all manage equal rights without being reduced to a fetish object. Of all the factors I do not envy lesbians for this one at all. I cannot stand the attitudes of many yaoi/slash fangirls or that "pet homosexual" attitude (I enjoyed that "Disappointing Gay Best Friend" series specifically for lampooning this sort of attitude).

I think its true, its got a lot to do with double standards and because the majority of the population are straight, straight men do not have a problem with two girls which kind of protects them abit more from prejudice. If you get what I'm saying! =D

    It is.

There are sooooo many straight guys who love lesbians but want to kill gay guys. They're also generally the type of straight guys I'd hold a party to celebrate their death. Idiotic bigots who only like lesbians because of their porn. They're nearly as bad as Christian conservative bigots.

Because lesbians are dismissed as attentionwhores, they can go off and live a normal life. Gay guys can't.

I think both gay and lesbian women are looked down upon but in different ways. Gay men are beaten up more often by straight males and are looked at negatively. If two men kiss, it's not seen as acceptable. Just look at Adam Lambert's kiss with his dancer on live television and how people reacted.. It was a double standard for sure. I definitely think gay men face a lot of discrimination and harassment. Straight men seem to feel more threatened by gay men.

If two women kiss, it is seen as hot depending on the girl's physical appearance. If the women are not feminine enough, it is also considered not acceptable. Society wants two women to kiss, etc as long as it's solely for the pleasure of straight men and as long as they aren't really "together" as a couple. One thing lesbians face is the fact that people don't believe them when they come out. This might have to do with the women who kiss other women to turn on straight men. Okay, well since I am a lesbian I can say that most men don't believe me when I say I'm gay. They continue to flirt with me and border on sexual harassment. Lesbian women are sometimes afraid that straight men will try to rape them.

I think each biological sex polices its own gender-nonconformists.

The worst abuse I ever got about my sexuality was from straight girls talking shit. To the straight guys, I was just one of the guys. But for the gay guys I've known, the opposite is true. They hang out with the girls because the boys shun them.

The only lesbians who get public approval are Girls Gone Wild! gay-for-pay attention whores and high femme couples, only because they are pornographically objectified.

All other lesbians are fair game. Where I'm from, whether you're a gay guy or a gay girl doesn't matter. A faggot's a faggot.

We can blame straight pornography for this

A large number of films showing two girls with a guy, the girls are seen fondling and kissing each other
Even clips of girl on girl are often bundled along.

But when two guys on a girl, they won't even look at each other

Bi porn is a different genre altogether

Then the whole thing of "what is better than one hot babe, two hot babes. Remember American pie?
