I lived in San Francisco on the day Moscone and Milk were killed. Oddly, even then, there was all shock and sadness. Nobody felt Milk "had it coming" or "was asking for it".

I don't know enough about "day of significance" to argue one way or the other. It sounds like something that really isn't that significant at all. (I think square dancing is the official dance of Colorado, and I have a feeling it's probably in that same ballpark.) But that just begs the question - if it's not really important, why is it so important to vote against it?

I think it was a great opportunity for California to honor someone who made significant advances in the gay rights movement. Alot of people work for gay rights all the time but we don't really have a well-known figure like Martin-Luther King or Rosa Parks whom we can look back in the history books and say "this person make a significant difference." You know one day that children will read about gay rights at school. Harvey Milk is one of those people I would like to see acknowledged in those history books.

Becky I agree with you completely. I would love to one day look in a history book and right next to MArtin Luther King have Harvey Milk's own section.

I still don't know why California elected him... he has no political experience and was only an actor.

For exactly that reason. He was popular, well-liked by the common public, and in some ways it was like a joke gone too far. Like if Stephen Colbert were actually elected president.

the civil rights movement ended in the 1960's, yes? MLK day wasnt official until the early 1980's. obbviously, we arent getting the treatment we deserve. we will fight for what we want. we will win, and we will get a day, god damn it.

I don't actually know who this man is, but every time I hear anything about Arnold Swarzhisface (how do you spell his name??) it annoys me. I don't know - do you think he only got voted in because he was the only name that a lot of people recognised??

i think he was elected because of his finacial knowlege. he is rich, so he must know how to handle money. which makes him perfect to run our state.

    that last part was sarcasm.
