Does anyone watch the TV show Love, Victor? (inspired by the film Love, Simon, which is inspired by a book)

I admit I haven't seen Love, Simon and I haven't read the book either but I absolutely love Love, Victor.

    What is everyone else's thoughts?

Love, Simon was an excellent film. Some laugh-out-loud funny parts, many touching parts, and one of the things that I think was such a positive step is that the character was... ordinary. He wasn't a flaming queen, overly dramatic, didn't wear sequined outfits to school. Not that there's anything wrong with any of those, but Hollywood has tended to stereotype LGBT characters, and this was one of the first movies where that did not happen. I do recommend watching it.

Love, Victor extends the same sensibilities to a TV series. It's thoughtfully and tastefully done, and very effectively deals with a lot of the challenging emotional issues, communications difficulties, and other things that are part of everyday life not just for teens, but for anyone who is gay and in the early stages of coming out.

On the whole, the cast is strong, the acting is on-point, and I think it's an incredibly positive and uplifting show.

Love Simon and Love Victor were the first lgbt media’s I saw so they hold a special place in my heart. Granted, there’s some criticism and preferences I have with both. In the Love Simon movie’s case I don’t like how his friends completely ditched him for awhile after their argument. I can understand why they would be mad given the situation, but I still wanted Simon to get better friends who would be more understanding of his side too. Also, I think it would have been more romantic if Simon’s kiss with the boy he liked was in private. For Love Victor I strongly feel we need more development with Benji outside his love interests, and Derek should own up to his mistake with Benji from season one. Still I will give of them both props for trying to make gay characters who are not one note, and providing side characters I do like. Simon and Victor’s family, Felix, and Pilar just to name a few.

Sorry, I accidentally hit send and then I edited the message and wrote a long message then it wouldn't send it and now my whole message has gone!!

Basically @Chip and @caden0803, I totally agree with both of you. I think the character representation and storylines are absolutely incredible. I totally agree with that they have not stuck with stereotyping people who are gay. Though I must say I do love Rahim.

Not a fan of the romance genre, but it's a good show for those who are.

I would add Rahim in my list too. Part of me even hopes if season 3 happens he and Victor remain friends. It would be good representation to show not all gay man are attracted to one another.

    Fair enough @BlueMonday . Romance isn't for everyone .

@caden0803 oh I really really hope there's a season 3! And yes, that would be cool. Though I do hope they both find love that lasts a while at least, not nessecarily with each other but yeah.

Really enjoyed Love Victor and cannot wait for season 3. Tbh it was that show that gave me the drive to start coming out to a few people. So kinda have some very strong emotions where that show is concerned

I think what Lemony means is that she wants a storyline featuring a lesbian couple.

I can't wait for season 3 too!!! And as for Lake being bi... Well people evolve. She may have always been bi, or she may have only just realised. But yes I would love a wlw storyline too which I think it was hinted so could be a possibility.

And thank you for clarifying what wlw meant because I too had no idea.

I have read the book, I have watched it first then I read the book and it's very different from each other. the book was staged at later date like college years I think(I donut have a great memory) and my fav part was when Simon and the gang were in the nightclub (it's memorable for me)(I want to spoil but I have decency). It's a good read IMO.

The writing for Love Victor has been pretty outstanding. Every so often in watching various things that happen in each episode, I get annoyed, but then I have to remind myself... this show is written for teens, so it's going to reflect some of the drama and lack of awareness typical to people just beginning to find themselves.

I do think they have done an extraordinary job of portraying complex issues with sensitivity and understanding... such as the difficulty that Victor's mother had with accepting him, and the complexity of his father's attempts to accept him, but not understanding best how to handle that. It's a little bit story-book-positive with things for the most part working out, and that may alienate some people whose lives in high school are downright miserable, but on the whole it's extremely well done.

For those that like this show, they may also like the Canadian show (pretty widely available in the US) called "DeGrassi: Next Generation. It isn't centered on a gay character, but there is a character in it (Marco) who goes through the same process of self-awareness and coming out, also to an ethnic and not-terribly-accepting family (Italian in this case.) DeGrassi also covers a lot of complex and difficult issues, such as teen pregnancy, eating disorders, self-harm, drug addiction, and other common teen experiences, with sensitivity and thoughtfulness. Pretty sure it's still available on one of the major streaming services.

Victor's mother learning to accept her son for who he was is one of my favorite storylines in season 2.
