I've been in the situation for a year or so where I've been comfortable-ish with coming out to new people I meet as and when it comes up in conversation (I've always done it, but with my heart going at a million miles an hour for a couple of minutes, so I guess not that comfortable!). I use social media a lot for professional networking, and when I started a new job last week I took the opportunity when updating my biography to add a rainbow flag - so I've effectively come out to my entire professional network now

Congrats on feeling comfortable to post the flag!

I just went through a job search too. I made sure to mention my LGBTQ hobby group involvement, and my orientation. I asked how people would be with that where I will work. It felt good to be claiming my bisexuality so openly, and knowing they are ready for my openness. I hope you enjoy your new job environment Broccoli!

Have you received any surprising responses that you did not otherwise expect?

I too remember how wonderfully liberating it was when for the first time I could openly say I was gay. It was a heady experience.

I'm lucky to work at a public university, which endorses diversity of all sorts. I am not out there (hell,I've only been out to anybody for the past 14 days), but it wouldn't matter. I'm one of the founding members of the Ally network (staff supporting LGBTIQA+ staff and students), and my professional email signature includes a mention of my Ally participation (and in rainbow colours, too). I'm one of the people also pushing for a formal transgender policy.
