Let's just start a thread of what makes you sleep better and how does it help you & why.

    My fan.

I can't sleep in a dead-quiet room, it's just too quiet. I need some kind of steady environmental noise (fan, heater, air conditioning, etc) running to help me fall asleep.

I also don't think I'd be able to use those white noise machines, or like those nature sound CDs. They'd be too noisy and distracting for me as I'm trying to fall asleep.

My fan is a steady, not very loud noise that is just enough to keep the room from being dead quiet, but is also not loud enough to prevent me from sleeping.

I also can't sleep if I'm hot. If my AC is broken and it's like 80 degrees or higher outside, forget it, it's probably going to be a sleepless night for me. I need my room cool to cold in order to get a good night's sleep. Which is why, even in the middle of winter, the heat will be on, but I will also have my fan running to cool me down a bit. My heat is never set that high anyway.(like high 60's or low 70's) My fan practically runs every night all year round.

    Hey Bothwayssecret,
You are like one my best friends who likes the sound of the fan too. I love the sound of a crackling fire on fireplace, it is so relaxing and rain drops , and i could listen to sprinklers at night too it drifts me to sleep faster than anything lol . I know right it is harder to sleep on a deafening silence environment, what an ironic world.

I like the sound of rain as well. That combined with the sound of my fan is an interesting combination on rainy nights. Heck I just like rainy days/the sound of rain in general.

It makes it easier to sleep with its rhythm and the sounds are one I'm most familiar with when going to sleep or just being awake at night.

It’s not white noise, but I have a binaural audio album that I’ve used since high school. Binaural audio is a bit gimmicky in some situations, but I’ve found that the right wave pattern can put me to sleep within 15 minutes.

For some reason watching Law and Order:SVU knocks me out. Within 20 minutes I’m asleep. Buffy the Vampire Slayer works too. Never had a nightmare from it.

Agreed. Also the narrator of forensic files puts me to sleep.

Antoher thing I want to add, I also change the setting in my house with the temperature. So first, I keep the AC on until it’s under 70F at night. Then I keep the window open while it’s between 70F-50F. Once it’s under 50F at night, I close my window. Not because I get cold, but I tend to get sick if I leave my window open after it gets below 50F. I always get allergies, head cold, flu, strep throat, etc. I keep my floor and ceiling fan on quite a bit as well. If I keep my floor fan off, then it has to be under 55F. If I shut my ceiling fan off, it has to be under 50F. I usually don’t turn the heat on ever at night. I have a comforter and I also put on a heavy blanket.

The rain. I also have fond memories of a family vacation house from my childhood that was so close to the beach that we could hear the waves crashing. It’s such a soothing sound.

If it's not my air conditioner, I like the sound of the inside of an airplane on my white noise app on my Kindle at night.

If that fails I have a CD of waves on a beach. Works every time.
