What Generation do you belong to?

I'm generation z. I was born in 1997.

 

I am generation z. I was born in 2001.

 

It switches back and forth depending on who made the definition, I'm usually right on the dividing line only a few months between Millenial and Generation Z. Which is funny that those usually put my boyfriend and I in different generations even though he's only one year younger.

Generation Z based on your criteria though, 1996.

Gen z, born in 1999. Some people say I'm a millennial, others say gen z, others call me "cusp millenial" I really don't care. I just try not to be a total teenage stereotype. I actually fit more 90's lesbian stereotypes. Maybe I've been listening to too much Indigo Girls...

lol I remember my grandparents sometimes played the indigo girls when I was young. And I was born in 97!

 

Gen Y, I was born in 81

 

Gen Z, I was born in 2000.

 

I practically live on indigo girls music. I listen to it all the time, thankfully my dad puts up with me singing Ghost as loud as I can whenever I drive him places. Everybody's listening to Panic! at the Disco and Janelle Monae, and I'm just sitting over here like "wasn't the indigo girl's eponymous album groundbreaking? Melissa Etheridge wasn't even out yet, but they were out and grew an incredible fan base! Haven't you listened to it?" No one ever knows what I'm talking about, lol.

By the way, 97 was a great year for them. That was right around when Shaming of the Sun came out, one of my favorites. Very gay. I highly recommend taking 6 minutes and listening to Shame on You and It's Alright. They're really great songs. Some of their best.

Generation X, just. Born '76.

 

Same here but born in 1975.....I still feel young lol

 

Depends, I was born in 1997 so with this criteria, I'm gen Z but there's other times with different criteria that say I'm a millenial.

 

I'm 2001 so Generation Z, but I think it is total nonsense.

Do you think for 1 minute that I have more in common with kids born in 2018 rather than those born in 1995?

It makes 0 sense. Even if my year of birth falls into the category, I will never consider myself Gen Z.

 

Baby boomers are the last distinct generation. The rest just meld seamlessly into one another. My father is a boomer and my mother in generation X. I was born in 1991. I remember picking up a weird religious magazine in the early 2000s that described people born in the 90s as part of generation X. I don't know when the term "millennial" was invented.. or started getting used more frequently. But apparently people weren't using the term as frequently back then. Either the person who wrote that didn't know what the fuck they were on about or people just can't seem to make up their minds on who belongs to which generation.

I personally struggle to see the difference between someone born in 1995 and someone born in 2000. They seem pretty much the same to me.

 

Based on the criteria they used to define the difference between the two generations, yes you do.

The two biggest things they use to mark the difference is technology and the state of the world. Most millenials grew up in a time where modern technology either didn't exist or was so new that nobody really understood it. People born in the early-mid 90's and earlier didn't have technology surrounding them everywhere they went, life was still simpler and people could function without their phone/computer and there was no social media or forums like this one to post on yet. Everyone in Generation Z grew up with modern cellphones, computers, social media etc. being a normal part of life. That's a huge cultural difference.

The state of the world was different too. There was a lot less security and risk before things like 9/11, terrorism, and the Iraq/Afghan wars happened. Most millenials felt safe growing up because it was so rare for a mass shooting or terrorist attack to happen. Everyone in Generation Z has grown up knowing they could potentially be killed by a crazed shooter or terrorist at any time because it happens so frequently now. Airports didn't even use metal detectors before 9/11, and now they have machines designed to detect explosives you might be carrying just by scanning you.
