They said they rejected it because that were afraid that it would create “division”?

    What a spineless excuse.

Do any of these crossings exists elsewhere already?
If not, it could be a safety issue if drivers don't know to stop...
Yes, it looks pretty obvious that it's a crossing but maybe it has to be made official in Road Traffic Laws.
    I don't know.

It says it all how the Mayor said "the way in which they choose to live." Haven't heard that before- our lifestyle choices, blah blah. And he said there are people who've said they don't want to see it, so he's being sympathetic to the bigots and not the LGBT.

We used to have rainbows in the classrooms in infant school. Rainbows were used to indicate children crossing... Now just because it's LGBTQ it's not liked by some. It's a shame. Rainbows are glorious and diverse.

I'm going to have go against everyone else here - that rainbow crosswalk is super out of place and meaningless. Painting random things rainbow doesn't support inclusion. The students at the school obviously already support LGBT people since they requested it, so how is paint on the floor going to increase that support?

Nobody is going to be driving along, see a rainbow painted street and suddenly go 'oh I guess I like gay people now, this paint has profoundly changed my views!'

They didn't say in the article why the crosswalk was painted in the first place but in Halifax the ones at major intersections downtown are painted every year for Pride Week, kind of like putting up Christmas decorations, I thought.

    Yes. See link: http://www.fox10phoenix.com/news/ar...ll-rainbow-crosswalks-in-honor-of-lgbtq-pride

I guess if drivers do not know to stop then they should get their sorry asses off the road. Drivers don't stop when pedestrians are in white colored cross walks, so rainbow should alert them to be alert.

    See quote: "
On Tuesday, Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton and the City Council voted unanimously to install rainbow-painted crosswalks at two locations to show support for the LGBTQ community."

I guess the mayor and city council is official enough.[/QUOTE]

I've personally seen rainbow crosswalks in various cities East Hollywood for one.

I love rainbows. for me they have a double meaning. LGTBQ and, more personal. also I just like them. as you might know a friend of Harvey Milk's designed the rainbow flag.

but anyway. back to the topic at hand.

Why don't the roads have different colour ranges of Rainbow Crossings? That would be even better. Different ones like LGBTQ+, Bi, Trans, Pan, etc.

This is so sad. I think that crosswalk looks beautiful! Such pretty colors, and a nice message. True, it might not change everyone's views who sees it, but it might change some. I think it's a lovely idea, particularly outside of a school.
