At present the only option, which you've discovered, is to disable your birthday display, which in turn also disables the age display.

Our forum software takes this approach because it provides the most privacy. However we can easily craft an alternative solution. I will confer with the admins about the best approach and follow up.

 

If it's doable, what if the settings were altered so only your followers/people you follow can see your full birthday (if you want them to; it can be a setting you can turn on or off), but the rest of the EC members and guests can only see your age?

If not, I'd be fine with just only showing age in profile for everybody

Is it possible to have the age quoted in the mini bio section on the left hand side of one's forum posts? (Along with date joined, # of messages, gender, etc)? Having the age quickly visible would be more convenient than visiting the profile page.

 

I'm afraid that's a feature we won't be offering as age is a dynamic calculation that would have to be performed for every post, in every viewed thread, across hundreds of active users in real-time. Unlike simple arithmetic, tallying things up in the Gregorian calendar doesn't scale well.

When you see relative time on the forums, like something happened "X minutes ago" that's actually being calculated by your computer or cell phone locally. In order to do that with age it would require sending the actual birthdate over the wire, which is why the forum's original privacy settings operated they way they did, requiring users to release both their full DOB to display the age.

So, unfortunately, you'll need to pull up the user's profile to see their age (assuming their privacy settings allow it).
