Congrats to them... But thanks for the alert. I'll keep the radio off for a few days now. And I'll be careful not to watch TV News. They go so over the top on the radio station I lsten to and on TV News here, too. The only thing worse than UK talk radio and TV News is American talk radio and TV News.

I'm a man. I've been educated via American public education system. I have University degrees. I consider myself average intelligence, not super bright, not lacking.

Lol, I HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIGURE OUT UK CITIZENS FASCINATION WITH THE ROYALS!

Well, I don't know about UK citizens, but as a citizen of the US, it fascinates me. We don't have a royal family, and American politics (regardless of whoever is in office) can get quite boring. Plus most of our politicians and presidents are already married with children by the time they are elected, so we never have a chance to look forward to presidential weddings or babies. Also, our presidents change every four to eight years, so it's not like we can get invested in them like we can with a royal family, who are usually reigning for decades. (I know the Queen doesn't have much power compared to parliament, but it's still fascinating).

And even though it doesn't mean much, since Harry will never likely see the throne, Meghan Markle is an American, so we feel somewhat of a connection to the family now, since she will be one of the lucky few Americans who get to become royals, like many women before her such as Grace Kelly, Caroline Lee Radziwell, Marie-Chantal Miller, Wallis Simpson, etc.

It's also escapism. Most of us grew up watching and reading about fairy tales, so with modern day royal families, we get to see these fantasies represented, and we can live them out vicariously.

Here's something that explains the obsession: https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/british-royal-family-obsession_us_5a4b0788e4b025f99e1d0a4b

Well, it means not having to have a Presidency. Presidencies generally cost a lot to run. One would think that a Presidency would be cheaper but they are not. Even emasculated Presidencies are costly. They change periodically. Ex Presidents and their families have to be looked after, etc,

Yes, we have to suffer more pomp and pagentry - but some in the UK like that. Not me of course. Yes, so a few get to be privileged. The fact is that we'd prefer to be the privileged ones. Do we abolish it just because there is privilege though? I say no. It works.

Also, although the Monarch has very limited power, it does have the ability to create a Constitutional Crisis to stop a bad governmen if it really wanted to. And think Nazi Germany. If it had had a Monarch then Hitler wouldn't have gained both the Chancellorship and the Presidency.

Anyway, people insist on proof. What I say isn't good enough. So here is the proof:

I wasn't trying to say that one is better than the other or more cost efficient. I was merely trying to explain why some Americans are interested in the royal family.

I do agree though that presidencies are costly.

I think it would be good for you guys, and us in the UK, too, if we create a Dual Monarchy. I was going to suggest that you guys have Harry and Megan... But, no, you can have William and Katherine. Harry and Megan can take over here after Charles. That's if Charles ever does become King. You can produce more detail for me. A Dual Monarchy will help us with Brexit.

    Grovelling sycophants aren't they?
I always end up watching at least part of this sort of thing on the news... just out of sheer curiosity at how crazy they all become. Its insane.

During the Royal Wedding, my mother made a point of leaving the country for a few days to avoid the never ending Royal worship. But even in Paris she couldn't avoid it completely.

    Makes me sick.

Does the British public even like Meghan? I've seen so many people complain that she's not right for the royal family. I don't think it matters, but some have issues with her.

That, and I think others have issues with her being American and divorced.

As long as she makes Harry happy and can help rule the country should Harry ever become king, then what difference does it make?

A tiny minority would have issues with anyone.

All of the people that I know think thst she is smart and lovely, and are of the thinking that if Harry is happy then we are happy. Sorry, I can't give evidence of the prevalence of this view. I know that some on here insist on research, studies and statistics as evidence... But I am sure that most like her, me included, for what it's worth. If anyone wants to attempt to provide proof to the contrary I'd laugh in the face of it.

I like her, and I'm not even British. I like all four of the younger main royals (Will, Kate, Harry, Meghan)

Oh, you'd be surprised at just how much power the monarch does have.

Really? I've always read she has certain powers and the rest was left to parliament. I know she can veto certain things, appoint prime ministers, summon parliament, declare war, and issue pardons. What else does she do?

It's not just UK but worldwide. I think Princess Diana had a lot to do with it because she was very charismatic and the song "Candle in the Wind" made as a tribute to her at her funeral ended up being the biggest song of 1997. There are still many conspiracy theories related to her death but I think Princess Diana made the royal family appear more human.

Then fast forward to 2018 and her two sons William and Harry have the same charisma and are well liked by the mass of the populace. It's kind of like a soap opera because both William and Harry grew up in the public eye so there is an investment in their happiness on the part of the broader public.

A very good explanation. Thanks. KyleD you have a way with words and content. You "get it" and have the ability to put it into words.
