I know several site owners, including a couple of the largest gay-for-pay sites out there.

    Both bottoms and tops.

That is absolutely a stereotype. Though, like most stereotypes, there may be some basis in truth, it certainly doesn't apply on the whole.

I hate the false logic that a guy who sleeps with a guy no matter what is "gay" yet nobody says the same for a gay guy who is sleeping with women (or a straight woman sleeping with women). It's hypocrisy and double standard. Almost nobody is 100% gay or 100% straight, almost everyone has the capability to sleep with both sexes, even straight guys. Straight men aren't any different than the rest of us in that regard, there's just more social stigma.

Porn is fake anyway, it's acting. If a gay guy had to kiss a girl in a movie or TV show, nobody would say he was secretly straight, we'd know that it was just an act, and done for money. Porn is honestly the same way. "But they literally had sex on screen!" Yes, and actors literally do kiss other actors on screen, but it doesn't make it any less of an act.

THIS! Since porn is work for pay - Gay or otherwise - (and make no mistake, IT IS as much WORK for the actors as it is simply fantasy for the viewers) sexuality isn't the ultimate issue. It's about hat individuals are willing to do to earn money. They say that prostitution is the oldest 'profession' in the world. Prostitution is about allowing your body to be used for sexual purposes. Today, that can be done on camera and distributed. We call an orchestrated version of that "porn." Doing what you have to do in order to survive, however morally distasteful, is a physical act that, as @Chip has said, has absolutely nothing to do with the actual sexual orientation of the individual.

    My 2cents.

Ahh okay, thats interesting, although I really meant was there any study or data collection on the correlation between claimed sexuality and proven sexuality. To be honest, I've heard about this locally too. A friend knows someone at his work who claims to be completely straight, but he found porn pictures of him online and one day the guy showed up with loads of cash and a new car.

I didnt mean that you can usually tell in terms of stereotypes - I meant you can usually read it in a persons eyes or body language. It's not something people are usually aware of in the context of porn, but its something I tend to notice.

I haven't seen any decent studies. There were a couple referenced in a book I read a while back, but as I remember they were very amateur studies with terrible methodology.

It would definitely be interesting, but I would doubt it would be easy to get the cooperation of the porn site owners, which you'd need in order to contact and interview the models. I also suspect it might be difficult finding funding for such a study, and perhaps difficult to get it past an IRB. Perhaps as the stigma associated with porn continues to decrease we will some day be able to do this.

Why do you even know the names of these people? They are not people to look up to.

I'm not looking up to them, I never said I did. I just know their names because I watched some of their clips.

Would love to see for curiosity's sake how lesbian hyenas get it on...probably use angry cobras as strap-ons or something...

I bet David Attenborough has seen his fair share of weird animal sex practices...like queer chipmunks and stuff...

That all makes good sense to me. Btw, your second notion is (r)evolutionary - is both evolutionary and revolutionary. Some won't like it. But then what's the difference between a hypothesis and a theory? Not much really, only a the theory has been accepted much more. It being more accepted, though, still doesn't make it fact. And i wish that people on EC would stop claiming that greater acceptance of an idea proves it to be fact! Actually, greater acceptance and adherence does not a theory make!

Wide acceptance of ideas doesn't make them factual (for proof, just look at the delusional beliefs by some in the US about our current political status). However, when we're talking about psychology, the combination of research and acceptance of a given set of understandings by those who work with those populations day in and day out are a pretty good indicator of where things are.

If we are talking about porn, where the ‘porn stars’ get paid to have sex for other peoples pleasure, then that is immoral no matter the orientation of anybody involved.

I know its very trendy to believe that prostitution and all porn is cool and okay but, actually, if you think about it, taking advantage of people and coercing them in to having sexual intercourse is a pretty disgusting thing to do.

To be clear, I do not condemn the prostitutes; they are the victims in this.

What makes you think that porn performers are being coerced into having sex? While there may be the occasional incidence of that happening, and certainly there are performers who choose to do it to pay for drug addictions and such (and most are not coerced by the porn companies) there are also many others who choose to perform in porn (or, for that matter, choose to be sex workers) who genuinely enjoy what they do.

Don't get me wrong... there's a lot of shady behavior in the porn industry. But I don't think it's at all accurate to convey the decision that porn performers make as 'coersion'.

I think its safe to assume that a large amount of porn actors are young and in need of money. The people who produce porn take advantage of that.
From there, there are varying degress of coercion for other porn actors.

Or maybe I am letting my own personal experiences colour my opinion on this?
3/3 of the prostitutes/porn actors who I know, do it because they would otherwise have no money. Taken advantage of by dirty old men who they hate.
I’m not saying that this represents a fair sample of people who ‘perform’ in porn. I am just saying, I dont see how a lot of porn actors dont also have this experience.
I’m sure there are many very very rich porn actors who just love the only job they have ever known (a job which has made them rich and a job in which they have reached the top of their field) but this is like talking to the Regional Manager rather than the normal everyday worker. And I’m sure the porn industry would love us all to believe that every single one of their porn actors are porn fanatics who just love being paid to prostitute their own bodies out for the enjoyment of the customer. But, no, I just dont see that being the reality of the situation.

I think that it's much more complicated. I'd prefer that both porn and prostitution didn't exist. Governments have tried to ban both but they then exist underground in the black economy. Some governments decriminalise prostitution to protect the protestutes. Many countries legalise porn but watch over / regulate it. A few countries have legalised prostitution and made porn regulations lax.

But it seems that whether porn is banned, regulated or unregulated, and whether prostitution is illegal, decriminalised or legal, there are those who choose to work in each or both, and there are those who get trafficked, coerced or lured into each or both.

And I don't think it's a simple case of prostitutes being the victims and those who pay them being abusers. Just as I don't think it's a simple case of porn users being victims and porn makers being abusers. I think that there is and can be abuse on both sides of each.

    Well...

    1. I think you are indeed letting your personal experience color your opinion. For at least two of the most popular gay-for-pay sites, many of the performers are college students who have chosen to do what they do as something they find to be an easy way to earn money to pay for college. I personally know a number of people who did porn during their college years and now have masters or doctoral degrees, or are otherwise quite successful and happy.

    2. While there are certainly shady characters in the industry (I would argue less so than in the investment banking and finance industries), the majority are large porn companies with dozens of employees. These companies don't need to coerce or take advantage of anyone, as there are more people seeking to do porn work than there are openings available.

    3. I doubt there are many people who do porn because there is literally no other way for them to earn money. There might be no other way to make easy money, but there are always options. I'm a big believer in people taking personal responsibilty.

Now... this said, I would not suggest anyone make the decision to do porn, unless they have really seriously considered (and perhaps discussed with others) the long-term impact. While in 2018 the stigma associated with it is considerably different than it was even 5 years ago, there is still stigma, and some doors will be closed by that decision. I would agree that people may not adequately consider what it means to have that content out there in perpetuity, but I do think that at a certain point, people have to take responsibility for the decisions they make.

    Like, an actor? That's fine.
As long as they don't go around lying for more media attention.
