Hell, I like the idea of a fantasy battle story more than a romance story.

Why not both? My main story has plenty of both.

Both can be good as long as there's some balance

Well, you can't have non-stop epic fantasy battle throughout an entire story. Between the climactic conflict moments, you have intrigue and those often lead to emotional climactic moments in the story progression. Romance is a very common end result and also a good way to let the readers relate to a character since everybody loves.

Yeah, I agree with you. It would be boring to have all action and no character development, so it does give you a good excuse to add some romance in.

Admittedly, I do have a fantasy action story, but I didn't add any romance to it. However, it does have a lot of friendship and family bonds in between battles, that can lead to similar emotional outcomes. I think having any kind of relationship development is pretty great.

I have to ask. What's your opinion on dragons?

Question to everyone: What's your starting point when writing a story? A character, an image in your head, an ideological conflict, a particular aspect of world building?

Personally it is a phrase that gets stuck in my head. I am a poet primarily, so that is the method to my madness. I just start to build a poem around that phrase.

Usually either a character or the main plot idea. One of my stories started around a character I grew obsessed with and then just developed everything around her. The other story started with world building/plot ideas, and characters made from that.

    @Cinis

A 'twisted-society' type idea. Then I decide on the character's characteristics, sometimes rolling a die to decide it. Then I start writing the full story but briefly, then fill it out. I've only finished 2 stories though and they're not even "Twilight" good, so you won't be reading them any time soon.

Creating characters is my forte; they come to me almost effortlessly. Once I've come up with a character I like, I think about what sort of world fits them and the world and its rules automatically fall into place, including additional characters that fit the setting. After that, the story sort of writes itself based on the personality and motivations of the characters I've set in place and their interactions with each other.

My stories are all extremely character driven and I rarely know where they're going; they just sort of write themselves.

It depends on the kind of story. Sometimes I'll start with a single idea (whether it's a Character, a setting, or a concept I want to explore) and grow the story from there. Other times I bring together several ideas that aren't enough to make a story on their own, and combine them to make the basis of the story.

i once wrote a short story (17 pages lol) about steampunk/victorian era england with three main characters: a gay guy, a pansexual guy, and a genderfluid girl whose pronouns shift around
i also have written a few chapters of a novel about a transboy who tries to kill himself and is put in a mental hospital (it's a lot funnier and better than it sounds)
i write poetry as well

Wow this chat has really taken off since I last viewed, I'm glad to find so many dragons fans! You can't have enough dragons, especially not in fantasy.

That sounds pretty epic! The only genderfluid character I've read about in fantasy, was a girl/boy called Alex in Magnus Chase by Rick Riordan who was a shape shifter. I thought it was really neat way of combining fantasy with LGBT themes without it being forced, like shoving in a random gay character.

I daydream a lot about sceneries which involves "what if's" and situations that I find intriguing, which ends up in me getting some pretty cool story ideas in my head. From that, I make a character that either is someone I want to be like or someone I'm similar to. Whenever I get in the writing mode I have to play music right away and write my ideas down, as I write best when I'm motivated. I have a whole playlist of music in case I enter my writing mode. I would say that I don't enter that mode often, but some could say the opposite, as there are about 128 stories (each a separate document) in my google drive that vary around 5-20 pages (font 11).

    Who doesn't love Rick Riordan?
