My art style is kind of whimsical, cutesy, comedic and surrealistic. I like to create art that's fun to look at, but not necessarily deep or symbolic. I enjoy symbolic art once in a while, but I just don't create it. A lot of artists like to tell me my art isn't art. They don't even call it bad, obnoxious or tacky. They straight up tell me it's not art. Does this happen to anyone else here?
Though I wouldn't consider myself a "professional" artist by any means (mostly still mediocre, but I'm getting better) I have never come across someone like that. I've heard stories of obnoxious people in college art classes who are super critical, pretentious, and downright rude. I myself have never been told something like "my art isn't art." Hell, the harshest criticism I've ever got was from my high school art teacher. And the only times she was kinda hard on me was because she knew that I could do better. I'm sure you're not alone however. Especially so if you happen to be taking a college art class. I haven't started college yet, but from what I've heard from older friends, people in college art classes can kinda be assholes.
I never even claim to be professional or the best. I just do art for fun at the moment. People still have pointed out several times my art isn't art.
Is it possible for you to post an example of your art? Just to see why people might be criticizing it to better discuss this?
No but one time I had a dream that I was an artist and I was painting and I was selling it on the street and the people said my work looked like it was done from a drug addict. Then my dad started yelling at them. So I started walking away from all of them to get the negativity out of my mind so I started playing with my blocks in the middle of the street and this one lady driving saw me and was so mad I was blocking up the road that her angerness spread to her car and her car started jumping because it was mad.
The only person who has ever said my art isn't art is myself because I don't think I'm all that good at it. And even then I only say that if I'm having one of those days where I think that everything I do sucks.
I'd post more, but I don't want people on other forums to find me. ---------- Post added 28th Jan 2017 at 02:27 PM ---------- Sorry about the huge image. It won't let me edit my post.
Fuck snobby people. That IS art. Just because it's not their idea of art doesn't mean they have the right to tell you it's not.
It's an epidemic problem that all artists who don't do "classical art" experience. My sculpting professor would go on rants when people called her a craftsman or a potter because she sculpted in clay. In the professional art scene art is a business like any other. Each style tends to try to "sell" their art as the best aka superior art. If someone tells you your not a real artist just take it as a compliment, it means they are in some way threatened by your work. Which of course means your work is powerful.
What exactly is classical classical sculpture/art? Marble and gold? A lot of people who use clay actually look down on me for using paper mâché. Thanks. I had a lot of fun making it.
