Okay, this is news from 2015, but Donald Trump recently tried to alter/remake his statements on autism and vaccines in May of 2016.

I am autistic and Trump's statements pissed me off. The stupid myth that autism is caused by vaccines will always makes me angry, but I just thought I'd make sure that people know how much of an idiot Donald Trump is. I, and many other autistic people, are personally offended by this. Autism is caused by vaccines? Autism is an epidemic? This isn't okay coming from anyone, but a candidate for the presidency of the United States? That just spreads these offensive, discriminatory, insane myths. This is junk science.

Its the same old speech of hate and ignorance that disgusts me. That homosexuality is immoral. That aromantism is an internet myth. That feminism will destroy society. That bisexuality doesn't exist. That Christianity is stupid. That blacks are racist when they advocate for themselves. That Islam is violence. That rape victims are at fault. That the elderly need to die off. That the jobless and the homeless are just looking to be freeloaders. That autism is an epidemic.

Its like hearing that conversion therapy is okay! I hear all about how autism must be cured, eliminated, conditioned, or some other aggravatingly offensive thing from politicians or so called advocacy/charity groups (like Autism Speaks). Its disgusting to call people an epidemic. I am more than a 'disease' and I don't need to be cured. And my so called "tragedy", as its often referred to, of being an autistic is a part of what makes me who I am. Like being queer is.

I really hate the myth and shame that vaccines are getting, especially medical professionals who tell parents to not vaccinate their kids.

Who came to the stupid conclusion that vaccines cause autism in the first place? And why are the people who believe that more afraid of their child having autism than them literally dying from an illness that vaccines would have prevented? It's completely nonsensical.

I'm not surprised Trump's taken up this stance as well, and I want to vomit at how he talks about the whole thing. Ugh. Add to the pile of s**t that comes out of his mouth. Dung beetles are now overfed because of this man's words alone.

Common ignorance from one obviously not acquainted with a scrap of scientific thought. Yet another reason I refuse to vote for this idiot.

It was a gastroenterologist named Andrew Wakefield that first published the paper that apparently drew a link between vaccines and autism. A gastroenterologist, by the way, is a specialist concerning the stomach and intestines in general. That is, he had nothing to do with 1. vaccines, and 2. autism.

Of course, that paper has been disproved thousands of times, but people still believe what they want to believe, I guess. It's utter shit that so much funding and resources has to go into disproving this fake paper, and as a scientist myself, this pisses me off more than anything else because it's the lack of funding that's restricting proper research, and this guy just publishes a fake paper that takes time and money to disprove ugh.

Apologies for the rant but to answer your question it was Andrew Wakefield.

Don't you dare day tl;dr. THIS IS IMPORTANT. - Imgur

Read this. It's basically a bunch of pictures of why vaccines are bad for you and cause autism, and then someone making a really long, well-educated rant about how they're wrong that I can't be bothered copying.

Not that I'm trying to be an apologist for Trump, but you can change a position in light of new evidence. Hilary did it with gay marriage. Perhaps he was ill-informed before about this issue and has since come upon new information regarding this topic. I've done this countless times in my own life with something I thought was correct and then I discovered new information that contradicted what I knew before. This is the very basis for the scientific method.

Anyways, with that said, the vaccine/autism hypothesis has been proven to be false MANY times, and is only proposed by persons not up to date on the current literature regarding this. Within the scientific community, it's a dead issue. If vaccines caused autism, we would see a massive spike in autism cases because basically everyone has been vaccinated. This isn't the case.

While I can't quite agree with the OP when they mentioned religions, I do think that it's stupid people think vaccines cause autism. Then again, isn't Jill Stein anti-vax too? I've heard that, but I'm not quite sure if it's true... Anyway, yeah, get your shots kids! XD I'm getting my flu shot this month- I'll tell you all if I feel autistic.

Someone published a bullshit article about the correlation in the medical journal The Lancet back in the 90s I think, and then it just blew up from there. I believe the guy lost his license afterwards, which I think we're all thankful for.

But...word got around to a lot of parental groups who will still believe a bullshit article that had no validity over reason and doctors, so we still have things like measles and whooping cough spreading like the common cold because of ignorance--not made better by celebrities reinforcing this tripe. As far as Trump goes, I'm not shocked either.

I've come to the conclusion that Donald Trump is actually a robot where everything he says comes from 4chans /b/ and /pol/ boards. Only explanation.

I would rather someone change their POV after learning some facts that contradict their earlier POV. Consistency of opinion is bullshit if that opinion flies in the face of facts. There are a lot of things I believed in that I had to change my mind on after learning I was basing that belief on mistaken assumptions or lack of knowledge. So I never get why people are so upset when someone says something different to something they said ten years ago, as if that proves they're slippery or weak. People evolve, ideas change, new facts come to light. Dumb is sticking to being wrong after it's been proven wrong.

BUT... I'm not ever sure that's the case with Trump because he's often giving two or three POVs in a single sentence. He's like a salesperson who says everything so you will latch on to the one thing you want from him and he can identify that. Then he zeroes in on it. Classic con, like the psychic "cold reading." They give you multiple choice and you choose the answer then they act like that was what they were talking about all along.

Another thing that bothers me beyond the shitty science in his "vaccines cause autism" stance is the implication in that last sentence that autistic people are NOT beautiful.

I think it's okay to make fun of Trump and laugh at him but we have to take the disaster he would cause if he becomes president VERY seriously and we have to be vocal in our objections to him because too much is at stake to just sit around in front of our computers chuckling.
