Without looking them up, I don't know many lesbian stereotypes. I've seen posts on here asking if anyone thought they were stereotypical, but I don't recall any addressing what those stereotypes are.

Here's my question: What lesbian stereotypes have you heard, and do you fit them?

I've heard the flannel and plaid thing, a LOT! - Nope. Not me.

Someone said to me lesbians love water and kayaking. Yes. That is me.

What else do you all have?

No to short hair. Definitely don't look butch (not femme, either). Not ugly.

I can go for Birkenstocks, and I'm not really fond of men, though not sure I hate them, either.

    Lesbians love water?!

I think that person who told you this might have a screw loose. haha.

I mean, I do love water but not kayaking so how does that work?

Sorry, but what is U-hauling? It's not a phrase I'm familiar with here in the UK.

Nobody has mentioned Subarus and Jeep Wranglers yet? I own a 1990 Toyota which has broken down so I travel by bicycle these days, so nope for me on those too.

    My I do list:
    • Love cats (and all other animals)
    • Love water (what? Never heard of this one before... lol)
    • Have U-hauly tendencies
    • Am tomboyish
    • Dress non-stereotypically (Snapbacks, hoodies, graphic t-shirts)

    My sort-of list:
    • Can fix some stuff around the house, but don't like getting dirty
    • Feminist but not misandrist (I just don't like most men)
    • Birkenstocks are OK, not favorites
    • Not ugly, but not a model
    • Sometimes play violent games, but not much (and don't play much in general)

    My nope list:
    • Not short hair
    • Not butch
    • No kayaking (never tried it, but it doesn't look that fun)
    • No flannel
    • No plaid
    • No Subarus or Wranglers, although I do like the 90s Outbacks.
    • Not really into sports, watching WNBA is good though.

Then there is this list from that OK dating site's statistics:

So... Let's all go do some drugs, be artsy and do kinky stuff! Afterwards we can all talk about how we hate religion too. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:ride: Also apparently we aren't actually more into sports than straight women even, let alone men. Looks like we all just like tell each other we are going to go play sports, when actually we go home and hang out with our cats and smoke pot...

    Edited to add:
Landgirl: when you move in with your girlfriend after only knowing her for a short period of time.

U-haul is a company that rents out trucks for people to do their own moving instead of hiring movers. It's a play on "you haul" your own stuff.

The stereotype is that lesbians move in together super fast so u-haul is used as a verb.

I'm surprised no one mentioned feminism, veganism, or Ellen Page

I mentioned feminism. Also I am a mostly vegan vegetarian (cheese on pizza cannot be replaced), so I guess that would have gone under my "sort-of" list. Also Katherine Moennig > Ellen Page... Just saying...

I had to look that up too.

I've heard being a vegetarian and wearing dungarees. Also being artsy, which is on the list linked to by HappyGirlLucky.

At the risk of looking stupid...is the plaid/flannel thing just checked shirts? Is it a particular type?

Flannel refers to the fabric, it doesn't have to be checkered while plaid means checkered. I think most people use the terms interchangeably though. I actually looked this up recently because I was confused too. So you are not alone.

Thanks! Glad I'm not alone. They're not terms I've really heard used in the UK.

I just think it's funny there's so many stereotypes and some people act like we have to know and fit them, yet almost none of use do. Maybe some each, but I know just as many straight women that do.

    Haha, I love this thread!

I do love some flannel. I only own two. I usually want it when I am feeling bad. It's comforting.

I do love kitties. Other animals, too, but kitties are the best.

I thought about being vegetarian, but I couldn't do it. Too anemic.

So much feminism. I don't think Ihate men. I just don't really want to date them. Unless their gay.

I don't do the drugs. Hoping that pot gets legalized in my state someday. Once it's legal, I'll go for it. Until then, concern for random urine screens at work.

The first car that my dad bought for me in high school was a Subaru station wagon. I had a second station wagon for like 11 years. Since then I have really wanted to own Subaru wagons (or frankly most Subarus) again but actively chose not to because closet.

My hair is really long, almost to my elbows. I want to change it since coming out, but not butch short. I don't know what I want it to look like.

    I love the Home Depot.

I really like DIY projects and house projects and fixing stuff and problem solving that involves tools.

I really like boots, like steel toed boots or doc martens or other lace up boots.

    I really like Chuck Taylors.

I used to have a hat addiction. I'm in recovery. Since coming out, Ihave let myself by a few les-signaling hats.

    Short nails.

Sports bras often when I'm not even playing sports.

    Sometimes, vests.

    Camping.

    Geeky interests.

My new Dr Martens have just arrived.

I used to wear a lot of hats, but what's a "les-signalling hat"? Not familiar with this.
