Why not call *everyone* zie instead ? I bet some languages have gender-neutral way to refer to a person, why not in english as well ?

I've heard this argument before and yes, while some languages do have gender neutral ways of referring to someone like with Japanese (*name*-San can be used with men and women), the biggest issue with that is if you were to call everyone Zie, you could argue that you're then disrespecting people by using pronouns they don't want even if your intentions are pure.

Some people think it goes against grammar rules (I don't see that though, I've used ''they'' as singular in the past). I am not asking you to create new words just for me, I want ''they/them'' pronouns. Just some people won't use them on the grounds I said in my first sentence of this paragraph. What's whiny about wanting to be respected? I've given you ''they/them'' pronouns, and refusing to do so is what I consider disrespectful. But people will say I'm disrespecting their choice for ''correct grammar'' so I give them something else that won't make me dysphoric - hence the new pronouns. It's not exactly what I want, but at least it's not he/she. But if you're talking in terms of a ''good reason for refusing they/them pronouns'' I don't consider ''grammar'' to be a good reason, but some people see it as a good reason.

How about we all stop fighting and just agree to refer to people by the pronoun that the person in question has specified as their preference?

The difference between "they" and "zie" is that you're not making up words when you use "they", and it is something that is used very commonly. Actually, at some point I'll probably use "they" to refer to you even if you go by "he" or "she", merely because it's very natural to use "they" in language. It's not exactly correct grammar, but it is something everyone uses, so it shouldn't really matter.

I refuse to call someone "zie" or "zim" because those pronouns aren't even REAL! Sorry, but once again, there's no good reason to use those pronouns on ANY creature unless they're an alien. If you're that sensitive, I'm pretty sure we're not going to be friends.

I'm fine with using "he", "she" or "they" as someone's pronouns. If you want me to create new words for you, we're going to have problems.

Because obviously everyone doesn't want to be referred to that way.

I don't. Some people might, though, and we've just got to respect their wishes.

Sorry, but this is just like how I won't call you a dog or transracial, even if you say you are a dog or transracial. If I know it's for a character or something that's a different story, but I'm most likely to just call you crazy if I know you're serious. And yes, I realize pronouns aren't the same as the dog thing- one's crazy, another's just easily offended- but you can't tell me that the transracial people aren't coming from that same weird political bubble as the "zie" pronoun people.

I'm not really fighting, just debating, and I think debating is how we go everywhere.

We should just call people whatever they want to be called. Calling people something that makes them uncomfortable because of our personal beliefs is not okay. We need to show everyone respect. It's like when my cousin started going by a nickname that people refused to use. It doesn't matter whether you like her nickname; you have to call her what she wants or else you're just being rude. You should always show respect for other people's preferences even if yours are different. It won't hurt you to be polite; that's just how you get along with others.

Pronouns like "zie" are real pronouns because they are used by real people. All of language is made up, anyway.

There should be a new rule on EC: Always listen to Ana, because she knows best.

Wait, so are they forcing everyone to use Zie? That's awful. I don't like they/them pronouns. He only, it makes me feel... confident I guess?

I'm not sure. The news article wasn't specific enough.

Sorry sis, but I tend to disagree: Language, whether you like it or not, is environmental but very deeply ingrained. If you want to petition to add the pronoun "zie" to the English language, then by all means go for it, but that pronoun isn't even semi-normal to English speakers, and asking people to use whatever nonsense words to their language for the sake of some individual's comfort is absurd. I've met those sort of people who use the pronouns "zie" or "zim", and let me tell you that they are NOT reasonable people: They think that it'd be perfectly okay to make something use fragaomomess or tinjeanonus as pronouns in place of "they" or "she", and that if those are the pronouns somebody wants everyone should have to use them, regardless of how hard they are to say or memorize. I can tell you right now that I am not going to make myself look like an idiot but using pronouns such as that in anyone's company.
