So, my brothers (adopted from Africa) say it's okay for black people to use the "N Word" with each other. This got me thinking: Is it okay for gay people to make or even laugh at gay jokes?

First off, it is okay AROUND THE RIGHT PEOPLE!
He will be shot and killed doing that to someone who does not like hearing it at all; especially the older folks.

Anyhow I make fun of jenner all the time, so I guess from my perspective we can roll with the jokes as long as they don't get too offensive or specific.

Depends on whether the joke was meant to insult or harmless fun. Many of the gay jokes I hear in comedies are by people who support gay rights and 'cause of that I just laugh instead of taking it as an insult. Sometimes, trans jokes have even made me feel good about myself.

I won't call anyone a fag even if I'm talking to/about another gay person in jest. But yes I make and enjoy gay jokes.

Well of course gay people can make gay jokes. Anyone can make gay jokes. Hell, everyone should be allowed to joke about whatever they want.

Whether or not the joke is funny is a different story.

This sums it up purposefully. Then again, I make holocaust jokes all the time, so maybe my opinion isn't valid here...

I do, anyone should be allowed to. Freedom of speech means you can. Gay jokes are amazing. I'd tell one now, buttfuck it.

As long as the jokes don't hurt or offend anybody, and they aren't meant as an insult, they are alright.

It entirely depends on the jokes. Some gays have incredibly homophobic, femininity-fearing or otherwise exclusive beliefs that aren't particularly acceptable. A masculine gay who derides feminine gays through humour or a feminine gay who establishes purity tests for sexual identity through humours does no favours to other LGBT people. Some gay jokes inherently rely on the assumption of abnormality or shame in non-heterosexual sex and relationships.

But of course lighthearted criticisms of some aspects of gay culture and jokes revolving around situations one's sexuality can bring up are entirely appropriate. Humour's a very useful tool for normalising LGBT people, criticising what needs to be criticised in an accessible way and enjoyable in its own right.

With my gay friends, we joke around & rib on each other for being a bunch of Queens and so forth all the time. I've found doing that really helps to normalize my sexuality and since doing that I feel much more at ease with being gay. Having that in my life really helped me get to the acceptance and coming out phases.

If the jokes aren't malicious toward gay people, I see nothing wrong with it.

Besides, thanks to the more dated meaning of the word "gay," pretty much all older books are full of accidental gay jokes. Everyone should be allowed to enjoy that.

They do it all the time. Just remember, George Carlin is the only comedian who stayed on top while insulting his Baby Boomer audience all the time (and good for him!). The moral of the story is that, if the gay people are laughing at the gay jokes, then they must be good jokes. The second principle is that a good joke always is anchored in an iota of truth.

Eh, I like jokes as long as they aren't blatantly targeting folks as "freaks" or whatever. Or rape jokes for that matter. Or graphic torture. Kinda gives the opposite of the intended feeling, therefore defeating the purpose. Jokes are supposed to be funny, not nauseating.

But I -did- just see one earlier I thought was pretty funny. Thank Google images for it's randomness.

As long as you know the company you are with, it is completely fine to joke about anything lgbtq related.

As long as the jokes weren't intended to cross the line of what can be joked about and if they're actually funny.
