Do you have an upper/lower age limit for dating someone?

    Hey everyone,

So, my friend, who is 19, came to me today and told me she's got a new boyfriend. She tells me about him and stuff, and then she tells me how old he is. He's 25. I've got no problem with this because there are bigger age gaps than that in relationships in my family, but it got me wondering how much of an age difference I could handle between me and a guy I'm dating.

I don't think I could date anyone who is younger than 18, and no one older than 24. I'm currently talking to a guy who's 20, and 19-21 seems to be my general age range.

What are your upper and lower age limits for dating someone, if you have any? I hope you do otherwise that could get weird.

Joe (also idk if this is in the right section)

Well, I prefer older. Minimum age has to be 21 (18-20 year olds don't drink in my country and they're generally kinda immature- I should know!). My new maximum age for dating is 10 years older or less. I just think there's a lot of issues with power dynamics if the age gap is bigger. Still lets me enjoy slightly older partners while having a little more in common (they're more likely to be college student or just starting out as adults) with anyone I potentially date.

I generally have a rule of 6 years either way.

Right now I'm not too sure. More than a year or two younger and I'm dating a highschooler. More than two or three years older and I'm dating someone with a wildly different life than me (uni student vs full time job, paying the bills and living away from their parents).

I guess it'll be different once I get some more life experience.

I'd prefer someone who was around my age would be ideal. But I guess anyone who's 3 years older or 3 years younger.

Age is just a number that doesn't say anything about your maturity. That's why I don't have a specific age range. I wouldn't do anything illegal of course and I would like to be with someone who is max. 10 years older because I don't want to be in my 30s when my partner dies of old age, but never say never, when I fall in love, I fall in love. As long as the person is great and has a similar maturity level as I have, I generally don't care how old they are.

Minimum age would be 5 years younger than me, that is, after I'm about 23 the youngest I'd date would be 18. Maximum age would be 10 years older than me. I would be comfortable with 3 year difference either way, though I like the novelty of dating someone the same age.

I don't have much dating experience and I'm also in high school so this could totally change when/if I start dating more, but I think I would be more likely to date someone my age or maybe a year or two younger than me. Yet, I often find myself attracted to people who are in their early 20s:slight_smile: I probably would avoid dating someone more than a year older than me though.

Typically +/- 5 years, but maturity gaps, wisen the older you get. So the difference between a 12 and 14 year old is massive, 28 and 30 year old, not so much.

Randy here had a good formula, but I forgot it. At 26, I think my age limits are 23 to 31. 23 because I don't think I could date a college guy who is right out of high school (later in life who goes back to school is different, but not someone who is in college right after high school (for bachelors)). Upper limit is 31 but it is more arbitrary. I like guys around my age. As you move on in life, the differences in maturity/over time start to diminish so you could potentially date a wider range of ages and still get the same effect of maturity/station in life.

My general rule has been two years younger, three years older, but everyone feels comfortable at different limits. My current partner is just a little under a year older than me, and we are on pace to graduate college around the same time.

I go by the belief that I should date someone that I potentially could've gone to high school with. So that makes it about 3 to 4 older or younger than me.

I wouldn't date someone younger than me year wise, ie if I was in Year 12 I wouldn't date a Year 11. As for older, I'd probably date a 25 year old at most. When I'm 18 I'd date a 30 year old. I kind of like being the younger one.

Hmm since I am 22; my age limit is between 20-26.. And that's for both genders. So since my youngest is 20, that would be two years younger and 26 would be four years older? My parents are a year apart but I really don't wanna date someone who is in like in their early 30s
